Actors Who Walked Off Set and Never Looked Back

Michael Michael, May 30, 2026

Most actors finish the job, even when the set is difficult.

But sometimes the relationship between an actor and a production breaks so badly that the actor leaves, gets replaced, or refuses to return. In some cases, the exit happens mid-production. In others, the actor completes a season or a partial shoot and then makes it clear they are done.

These stories show how creative pressure, safety concerns, bad working relationships, and personal limits can change a production overnight.

Peter Sellers

Peter Sellers’ exit from the 1967 Casino Royale became one of the most chaotic stories in James Bond-adjacent history.

Sellers played Evelyn Tremble, one of several “James Bond” figures in the spy parody. But the production was already messy, with multiple directors, changing tones, and reported tension between Sellers and Orson Welles.

James Purefoy

James Purefoy was originally cast as V in V for Vendetta, but he left after several weeks of filming.

The role required the actor to perform behind a mask for the entire movie, which created unusual challenges. Early reports suggested the mask was the issue, though Purefoy later said creative differences were the real reason he exited.

Harvey Keitel

Harvey Keitel was first cast as Captain Willard in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now.

The production began in the Philippines, but Coppola soon felt Keitel was not the right fit for the passive, haunted quality he wanted in Willard. Keitel left the project early, and Martin Sheen was brought in to replace him.

Mandy Patinkin

Mandy Patinkin’s exit from Criminal Minds was one of the most dramatic departures from a hit network drama.

Patinkin played Jason Gideon, one of the show’s original leads. But he later said joining the series was the “biggest public mistake” he had made because he had not expected the show to focus so heavily on violent crimes week after week.

Chevy Chase

Chevy Chase’s time on Community was filled with public tension.

Chase played Pierce Hawthorne, but reports over the years described clashes over the direction of the character and tension with the creative team. One widely discussed incident involved Chase walking off set during the Season 3 finale because he reportedly did not find a planned scene funny.

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose left Batwoman after one season, and the departure later became surrounded by serious allegations and competing claims.

Rose said they had suffered injuries and alleged unsafe working conditions on the show. Warner Bros. Television pushed back and said Rose was not brought back because of workplace complaints about their behavior.

Christopher Eccleston

Christopher Eccleston helped relaunch Doctor Who in 2005, but he left after only one series.

His Ninth Doctor played a major part in bringing the long-running British sci-fi franchise back to television. But Eccleston later spoke about difficult behind-the-scenes relationships and dissatisfaction with the working environment.

Gene Hackman

Gene Hackman’s situation on The French Connection is slightly different because he did not permanently leave the movie.

Director William Friedkin later said Hackman was deeply uncomfortable with the intensity of playing Popeye Doyle and tried to quit early in production. Hackman eventually continued, and the role won him an Academy Award.

Dax Shepard

Dax Shepard later admitted that a bad late-night appearance led to him being banned for a period from Conan O’Brien’s show.

Shepard said he had been drunk during the pre-interview and the actual taping, missed the cues Conan was giving him, and made the appearance difficult. He later spoke about the story with regret as part of his larger honesty around addiction and sobriety.

James Remar

James Remar was originally cast as Corporal Hicks in Aliens before Michael Biehn replaced him.

For years, the official explanation was creative differences. Remar later said he had been dealing with drug-related problems at the time and was fired from the film. Some shots of Remar reportedly remained in the finished movie, though Biehn became the actor audiences know as Hicks.

Stuart Townsend

Stuart Townsend was originally cast as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings before Viggo Mortensen took over.

Townsend had been involved in preparation, but Peter Jackson later decided the role needed an older actor. Mortensen was brought in at the last minute and went on to define Aragorn for a generation of fantasy fans.

Eric Stoltz

Eric Stoltz filmed for weeks as Marty McFly before being replaced by Michael J. Fox.

Director Robert Zemeckis and the producers eventually decided Stoltz’s performance was too dramatic for the comic tone of Back to the Future. The recasting was expensive and difficult, but it changed film history.

Suzanne Somers

Suzanne Somers’ exit from Three’s Company came after a major salary dispute.

Somers was one of the biggest reasons the sitcom became a hit, but when she pushed for a much higher salary, her role was reduced before she left the show. Her departure became a famous example of how pay fights could reshape a successful TV series.

T.J. Miller

T.J. Miller left Silicon Valley after playing Erlich Bachman, one of the HBO comedy’s breakout characters.

The exit was publicly messy, with Miller and people connected to the show giving different versions of why he left and how difficult the working relationship had become.

Donald Glover

Donald Glover left Community before the series ended, though his exit was much calmer than Chevy Chase’s.

Glover played Troy Barnes, one of the show’s most beloved characters. He eventually chose to move on, with his music career as Childish Gambino and other creative ambitions becoming a bigger part of his life.
