Celebrities who’ve been fired from major movie and TV show roles

Michael Michael, May 4, 2026May 4, 2026

Even Hollywood’s biggest names have faced career setbacks, and getting replaced or dismissed from a role is more common than you might think. The reasons vary widely, from behind-the-scenes conflicts to creative disagreements, yet many of these productions went on to become massive hits regardless. Here are some of the most talked-about stories from behind the curtain!

Colin Firth

Firth spent considerable time recording the voice of the beloved bear Paddington, but producers ultimately felt his voice carried too much weight and sophistication for the character. Ben Whishaw was brought in as a fresher fit for the role.

Sylvester Stallone

When the script for Beverly Hills Cop landed in Stallone’s hands, he pushed to reshape the character to suit his style. The studios weren’t on board with his vision, and Eddie Murphy stepped in to make the role his own.

Charlie Sheen

The team behind Two and a Half Men made the call to remove Sheen following a string of public outbursts and his refusal to follow through with a rehabilitation program.

Christian Bale

Bale had already been lined up for the lead in American Psycho when word got out that Leonardo DiCaprio might be interested. DiCaprio was briefly considered, but once he committed elsewhere, the producers returned to Bale, who later admitted he never truly doubted he’d land the part.

Megan Fox

Fox’s outspoken criticism of director Michael Bay — whom she compared to a controlling dictator on set — cost her a spot in Transformers 3. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was brought in to fill her shoes.

Julianne Moore

Moore’s departure from the Oscar-nominated Can You Ever Forgive Me? came down to a disagreement over her approach to the role. According to co-star Richard E. Grant, she had requested to use a fat suit and a prosthetic nose, which didn’t align with the production’s direction.

Edward Norton

Norton portrayed Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk, but when The Avengers came around, Marvel chose not to bring him back. The studio made clear they were looking for someone whose collaborative spirit matched the energy of the broader cast and team.

Ryan Gosling

Gosling was set to play the father in The Lovely Bones and put on around 60 pounds for the part. Director Peter Jackson, however, had a completely different picture in mind for the character, and the two sides simply couldn’t align on that vision.

Holly Hunter

The lead role in Chicken Little was originally written for a female character, and Hunter spent months voicing her. When the creative team decided to reimagine the character as male, Zach Braff took over the role entirely.

Taylor Momsen

Momsen spent four seasons on Gossip Girl before her character was written out. By the fourth season, her lack of presence on set and what directors felt was a below-par level of commitment to her performance made the decision an easy one.

Isaiah Washington

Washington’s time on Grey’s Anatomy came to an abrupt end after he made homophobic remarks directed at fellow cast member T.R. Knight. The production wasted little time in cutting ties with him.

Kal Penn

While still working on House, Penn received an invitation to serve in the Obama administration. He honored his commitment to the show until a natural stopping point, at which time the writers wrote his character out permanently.

Anne Hathaway

Hathaway was originally in consideration for a lead role in Knocked Up, but she grew uncomfortable with a particularly graphic childbirth scene the director insisted on filming realistically. She stepped away from the project, and Katherine Heigl took on the role.

Chloë Grace Moretz

At just 11 years old, Moretz completed all her voice recording for the character Penny in Disney’s Bolt. Despite her finished work, Disney chose to recast the role with Miley Cyrus before the film’s release.

Stana Katic

In early 2016, it was confirmed that Katic would not be returning to Castle for its next season. As it turned out, the series itself was canceled shortly after — but producers had already been moving forward without her.

Terrence Howard

Howard had a deal in place to appear across all three Iron Man films. When negotiations for the sequel came around, the studio offered him significantly less than originally agreed, arguing the film’s success didn’t hinge on his involvement. Howard refused the new terms and was replaced by Don Cheadle.

Leah Remini

Remini served as an executive producer on The Talk before being let go in 2012. She later reflected on the situation and acknowledged that her outspoken nature was likely at the core of the tension — staying quiet and compliant simply wasn’t something she was capable of.

Samantha Morton

Morton had voiced the lead role in Her throughout production, but during post-production, director Spike Jonze concluded she wasn’t the right match for the film’s tone. Scarlett Johansson was then brought in to rerecord the entire role.

Selma Blair

Blair played Charlie Sheen’s girlfriend on Anger Management until she was let go in 2013. She later filed a lawsuit seeking the earnings she would have received had she completed her run on the show. Her complaints about delays caused by Sheen’s difficulty memorizing lines were reportedly a key source of conflict.

Shannen Doherty

Tension on the set of Beverly Hills 90210 reached a tipping point when Tori Spelling personally called her father, producer Aaron Spelling, to voice her concerns about Doherty’s behavior. That call reportedly sealed Doherty’s fate on the show.

Suzanne Somers

Somers was a central figure on the sitcom Three’s Company until she pushed for a significant pay raise. The network didn’t agree to her terms, and she was removed from the cast as a result.

Jean-Claude Van Damme

Van Damme’s stint as the Predator was short-lived, with his background in kickboxing films clashing with the director’s vision for the character’s movement and physicality. He was eventually replaced.

Eric Stoltz Stoltz was the original Marty McFly in Back to the Future, and filming had already begun when the production team realized something wasn’t clicking. Michael J. Fox was brought on board, and the rest became cinema history.

Thomas Gibson

Gibson was a founding cast member of Criminal Minds from its very first episode in 2005. In 2016, a heated on-set dispute over scripted dialogue escalated badly enough that the decision was made to let him go.

Stuart Townsend

Townsend was set to play Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, but was let go just one day before principal photography officially began.

Judy Garland

The legendary Garland was attached to Valley of the Dolls, but her time on set left a poor impression and she was eventually replaced before filming was complete.

James Remar

Remar’s involvement in Aliens lasted only about a week before he was dismissed. Substance-related issues were cited as the reason behind his early exit from the production.

Erinn Hayes

Hayes had no warning that her character on Kevin Can Wait would be killed off at the end of the first season. Leah Remini was subsequently cast as the new female lead heading into season two.

Columbus Short

Short’s role on Scandal came to an immediate end following serious allegations of domestic violence. The production moved quickly to distance itself from him once the news broke.
