Actors who admitted they lied to get roles

Actors are often told to say yes first and figure it out later.

That advice can be risky. A role may require horseback riding, swimming, drumming, speaking another language, driving, fighting, or looking a specific age or height. Some actors have admitted they stretched the truth, hid a weakness, or exaggerated a skill just to get through an audition.

In most cases, these stories are not serious scandals. They are funny, awkward, and very human examples of audition pressure. The lie may have helped them get in the room, but they still had to do the work once the cameras started rolling.

Here are actors who admitted they lied, exaggerated, or bluffed their way into a role.

1. Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway wanted her role in Brokeback Mountain so badly that she said she could ride a horse.

The problem was simple: she could not really ride at the level the role needed. After getting the part, Hathaway had to learn quickly before filming. The story has become one of the most famous examples of an actor saying yes first and learning the skill later.

It worked out. Brokeback Mountain became one of Hathaway’s most important early dramatic roles and helped move her beyond her Disney-era image.

2. Eddie Redmayne

Eddie Redmayne also learned that lying about horse riding can backfire fast.

Redmayne said he claimed he could ride while auditioning for Elizabeth I. Once he got on set, he was put on a horse and quickly realized the truth had caught up with him. He later described it as one of the biggest Hollywood lessons he learned early in his career.

The mistake did not hurt him long-term. Redmayne went on to win an Oscar for The Theory of Everything and became known for major roles in Fantastic Beasts, The Danish Girl, and The Good Nurse.

3. Ben Hardy

Ben Hardy told a “big lie” to land the role of Queen drummer Roger Taylor in Bohemian Rhapsody.

Hardy admitted that he exaggerated his drumming ability during the casting process. After getting the role, he had to train hard to make the performance believable. PEOPLE reported that Hardy credited that white lie with helping him get the role.

The risk paid off. Bohemian Rhapsody became a major box-office success, and Hardy’s role introduced him to a much wider global audience.

4. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II said he could swim when he was cast in the Aquaman franchise.

He later admitted he could not actually swim at the time. In a 2026 interview, he joked that when asked if he could do it, he immediately said yes, then secretly taught himself before filming.

That role became one of his biggest blockbuster parts, with Abdul-Mateen playing David Kane, also known as Black Manta.

5. Ben Kingsley

Ben Kingsley admitted that he once lied about being able to ride a motor scooter.

In the same Entertainment Weekly interview with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Kingsley remembered being asked during an early BBC drama job if he could ride a scooter. He said yes, then crashed it, and the production had to bring in a stunt driver.

It is a funny early-career story now, especially because Kingsley later became one of the most respected actors of his generation.

6. Constance Wu

Constance Wu once pretended she could speak Korean for an audition.

She has said she learned a short Korean phrase phonetically from a friend and performed it well enough at first. The problem came when the casting director asked her to improvise more Korean dialogue. Wu did not actually speak Korean, so the moment quickly became awkward.

Years later, Wu became widely known through Fresh Off the Boat and Crazy Rich Asians.

7. Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock admitted she lied about her age to get an early film role.

For Love Potion No. 9, the filmmakers reportedly wanted an older actress for the part. Bullock told Barbara Walters in 1992 that she said she was 29 to help secure the role.

That early career gamble came before her major breakout in Speed, which turned her into one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

8. Laurence Fishburne

Laurence Fishburne was very young when he joined Apocalypse Now.

He has long been connected to the story of lying about his age to get the role. Recent coverage has revisited how young he was during production, with Fishburne reflecting on being only around 14 or 15 while filming difficult scenes.

The film became one of his most important early credits, long before Boyz n the Hood, The Matrix, and John Wick.

9. George Lazenby

George Lazenby had no major film acting experience before he became James Bond in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

His path to the role has become one of Hollywood’s boldest casting stories. He was a model and commercial actor before landing the part, and the mythology around his audition includes him dressing the part and selling himself as the right man to replace Sean Connery.

10. Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman has said she lied about her height early in her career.

At 5 feet 11 inches, she was told she was too tall for acting, so she would say she was 5 feet 10 and a half to get through auditions.

That half-inch did not define her future. Kidman went on to become an Oscar-winning actress known for Moulin Rouge!, The Hours, Big Little Lies, and many more roles.

11. Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth also dealt with height-related casting problems early in his career.

He has said he sometimes claimed to be shorter than he was because casting teams thought he was too tall for certain roles. Ironically, his height later became an asset when he was cast as Thor.

That role turned Hemsworth into a global action star and made his size part of the character’s screen power.

12. Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams reportedly did not tell the full truth about her comfort level around horses for To the Wonder.

The Terrence Malick film involved scenes with horses and buffalo, but McAdams was reportedly scared of horses and allergic to them. When asked if she had a problem working around horses, she said she loved them.

This was not a flashy blockbuster lie. It was a quiet example of an actor taking a risk for a director she wanted to work with.

13. Daniel Craig

Daniel Craig has admitted that earlier in his career he sometimes acted like he knew what he was doing on horseback.
