Long before modern movie stars shattered barriers in Hollywood, Lincoln Perry achieved something once thought impossible. Lincoln Perry Created the Stepin Fetchit Persona

Born in Key West, Florida, in 1902, Lincoln Perry began his career in vaudeville and traveling shows.

He eventually developed the character of Stepin Fetchit, whose slow-talking and lazy mannerisms became enormously popular with audiences during the 1920s and 1930s. The persona helped Perry stand out in Hollywood and quickly turned him into a major attraction.

His fame spread across the country.

At a time when opportunities for Black performers were severely limited, Perry achieved extraordinary success.

Despite his achievements, Stepin Fetchit’s screen persona drew criticism from many Black leaders and entertainers.

Offscreen, Lincoln Perry Was Very Different
