The death of former child star Daveigh Chase has prompted an outpouring of memories from fans who grew up watching her performances in Lilo & Stitch, The Ring, and Donnie Darko. The actress died on June 16 at the age of 35, with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later listing AIDS as her primary cause of death and chronic polysubstance use as a significant contributing condition.

In the weeks since her passing, members of her family have spoken publicly about her struggles, their relationships with her, and the challenges she faced later in life. Her father, John Schwallier, recently shared his thoughts on the tragedy, describing years of separation while expressing sorrow over the distance that developed within the family.

In an interview with The California Post, Schwallier said that learning his daughter’s cause of death did not come as a shock to him. He attributed his reaction to what he understood about the difficulties she had experienced over the years.

According to Schwallier, he had been aware of aspects of Daveigh’s lifestyle and personal struggles, leading him to believe serious health consequences were possible. While speaking candidly, he also emphasized the sadness of losing a daughter with whom he had limited contact for much of her adult life.

His comments reflected both acceptance of the circumstances and regret over their long estrangement.

Schwallier revealed that the last time he saw Daveigh in person was when she was around six years old. Although they reportedly maintained occasional phone conversations as she grew up, he said their communication eventually became infrequent.

In previous remarks following her death, he noted that he last spoke with her when she was 19 years old. According to him, family tensions and a difficult falling-out between Daveigh and her mother contributed to the distance that developed over time.

Reflecting on those years, Schwallier admitted that he carried a sense of emptiness because he was not present during much of his daughter’s life.

Daveigh Chase rose to prominence at a remarkably young age. She became widely known as the voice of Lilo in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, a role that introduced her to audiences around the world.

She later expanded her acting career with memorable performances in films including The Ring and Donnie Darko. Her ability to move between family entertainment and darker dramatic roles demonstrated a versatility that many young actors struggle to achieve.

For many fans, her work remains an important part of early 2000s popular culture.

Daveigh’s mother, Cathy Chase, has also spoken publicly about her daughter’s struggles. In an interview with the Daily Mail, she rejected suggestions that she had abandoned her child and insisted that she remained hopeful Daveigh would eventually return home.

Cathy suggested that her daughter’s addiction challenges intensified after a motorcycle accident in 2016, when she was reportedly prescribed pain medication. She described herself as a parent who never stopped caring or searching for ways to help.

Her comments highlighted the complexity of addiction and the emotional burden carried by families affected by it.

Media reports following Daveigh’s death have drawn attention to the difficulties she faced in recent years. Some outlets cited evidence suggesting that she may have experienced homelessness and severe health issues during the final chapter of her life.

The medical examiner’s findings noted chronic polysubstance use as a significant condition contributing to her death. Public discussions surrounding her passing have also renewed conversations about addiction treatment, mental health support, and the pressures often experienced by former child performers.

Many observers have emphasized compassion rather than judgment when reflecting on her life and legacy.

Schwallier also discussed arrangements regarding his daughter’s remains. He explained that her cremated remains are currently with her mother but expressed a desire to receive a portion of them to keep in a handmade memorial box at his home in the Philippines.

He indicated that he would pursue legal options if necessary, describing the request as an important way to maintain a connection with his daughter despite their years apart.

The comments underscored the enduring bond that parents often feel, even after long periods of separation and difficult circumstances.
