Billy Strings Returns to Stage in Hockey Helmet After Being Hit by Object During Concert

Michael Michael, August 18, 2026August 18, 2026

Billy Strings found an unusual way to make his point after an audience member threw an object that struck him in the head during a concert in Indiana.

The 33-year-old Grammy-winning bluegrass musician returned to the stage the following night wearing a hockey helmet complete with a protective visor. The humorous entrance came after a much more uncomfortable moment during the first night of his three-show run at the Fishers Event Center in Fishers, Indiana.

Strings, whose real name is William Apostol, had been speaking directly to the crowd when the incident happened. His initial excitement about returning to Indiana quickly turned to frustration as he confronted whoever was responsible.

The incident occurred Thursday, August 6, during the opening night of Strings’ three-show engagement in Fishers.

Strings was addressing the audience and explaining how pleased he was to finally perform after the concerts had previously been postponed. In the middle of his remarks, an object thrown from the audience struck him in the head. Reports identified the object as a lighter.

Strings immediately stopped speaking and questioned why someone would throw something at him.

The musician appeared particularly frustrated because the incident happened while he was attempting to express his appreciation for the audience.

Despite the disruption, Strings continued performing.

He Returned Wearing a Hockey Helmet

When Strings returned for the second night on Friday, August 7, he had clearly not forgotten what happened.

Instead of delivering another lengthy response, the musician walked onto the stage wearing a hockey helmet with a clear protective visor covering his face.

The unexpected accessory quickly drew attention from concertgoers and online fans.

Footage and photographs of Strings performing in the helmet circulated across social media, transforming an unpleasant incident into a memorable moment from his three-night Indiana run.

Fans discussing the concert online praised his ability to respond with humor after being visibly irritated the previous evening.

Fans Condemned the Object Throwing

The original incident also prompted criticism of the person responsible.

Fans questioned why someone who had paid to attend a Billy Strings concert would deliberately throw something toward the performer. Others expressed frustration with the broader practice of concertgoers throwing objects onto stages.

One Reddit discussion about the second Fishers performance included fans joking about the helmet while expressing support for Strings. Concertgoers also praised the Friday performance itself, with several describing the show enthusiastically despite the controversy surrounding the previous night.

The episode joins a series of incidents in recent years involving performers being struck or nearly struck by objects thrown from audiences, making stage safety an increasingly visible concern at major concerts.

The Indiana Concerts Had Already Been Postponed

Strings’ frustration was particularly notable because the Fishers concerts were themselves rescheduled performances.

The musician had fractured his leg in a skateboarding accident backstage earlier in 2026, forcing him to postpone the originally planned Indiana dates.

That was what Strings had been discussing when he was struck. He was telling the audience how happy he was to finally return and make up for the postponed performances.

The three rescheduled concerts ultimately took place August 6 through August 8 at the Fishers Event Center.

Billy Strings Has Become One of Bluegrass Music’s Biggest Stars

The strange helmet moment adds another chapter to a career that has helped bring bluegrass music to audiences well beyond the genre’s traditional fan base.

Strings released his breakthrough studio album Turmoil & Tinfoil in 2017 and followed it with Home in 2019.

Home earned him the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album, establishing Strings as one of the leading performers of his generation.

His later releases have continued that success. Live Vol. 1 earned another Best Bluegrass Album Grammy, while Highway Prayers further strengthened his reputation and brought him another victory in the category.

Strings is particularly celebrated for his fast, technically demanding flat-picking guitar style and his willingness to combine traditional bluegrass with elements of psychedelic rock, folk and improvisational jam music.

Strings Is Continuing His 2026 Tour

The Indiana incident has not stopped Strings from continuing his touring schedule.

Following the Fishers performances, his 2026 itinerary includes appearances in cities across the United States and Canada, including Fargo, Bozeman, Missoula, Vancouver and Everett.

The helmet may ultimately be remembered as a funny visual from the tour, but the reason Strings wore it carries a more serious message.

Performers depend on audiences to respect the boundary between participating in a concert and interfering with the people onstage. Strings managed to turn his frustration into humor the following evening, but his reaction immediately after being struck made clear that he did not find the original incident amusing.

For fans in Indiana, however, his helmet-wearing return provided an unforgettable response: Billy Strings was back onstage, but this time he came prepared.
