Soap operas have launched more major stars than many people realize.

Before movie franchises, Oscar nominations, sitcom fame, superhero roles, and prime-time hits, plenty of actors learned their craft on daytime dramas and long-running serials. Soap work is fast, emotional, demanding, and constant. Actors may shoot heavy dialogue, dramatic twists, romance scenes, family fights, and cliffhangers at a pace that leaves little room for hesitation.

That is why so many performers credit soaps as a serious training ground. The storylines may be heightened, but the workload is real.

Here are famous stars who started on soap operas before becoming household names.

Demi Moore

Demi Moore got one of her earliest major breaks on General Hospital.

She played investigative reporter Jackie Templeton in the early 1980s, years before she became part of the Brat Pack and later a major movie star. Moore has looked back on the soap role as a huge opportunity because it allowed her to focus on acting and gain financial independence while still very young.

Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore’s soap opera start was more than a small early credit.

She appeared on As the World Turns from 1985 to 1988, playing Frannie Hughes and Frannie’s secret half-sister Sabrina. Her work on the show helped her build confidence and discipline, and she won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Ingenue in a Drama Series.

Sarah Michelle Gellar

Before Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar made a major impact on All My Children.

She played Kendall Hart, the long-lost daughter of Erica Kane, one of daytime television’s most famous characters.
