The Most Controversial Actors in Hollywood History Michael, May 16, 2026May 16, 2026 Hollywood controversy can take many forms. Sometimes it comes from a public outburst. Sometimes it comes from criminal charges, lawsuits, allegations, offensive comments, on-set incidents, personal conduct, political remarks, or years of tabloid attention. Not every controversy is the same. Some actors were convicted of crimes. Some were accused and denied wrongdoing. Some were acquitted. Some had cases dismissed. Some faced professional backlash for public comments rather than criminal conduct. Others became controversial because their private lives overwhelmed their work. Will Smith Source : Instagram/willsmith Will Smith spent decades as one of Hollywood’s most likable stars before the 2022 Academy Awards changed the public conversation around him. During the live ceremony, Smith walked onstage and slapped Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. Later that night, Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor for King Richard. The Academy then banned him from attending its events for 10 years, although he remained eligible for nominations and awards. Smith said he accepted and respected the decision. Johnny Depp Source : Instagram/johnnydepp Johnny Depp’s public image changed dramatically because of years of legal battles and public conflict with Amber Heard. The most watched case was the 2022 defamation trial in Virginia. A jury largely sided with Depp, awarding him $10 million in compensatory damages and also awarding Heard $2 million on one of her counterclaims. The trial became a global media event, with clips, testimony, fan commentary, and online arguments dominating social platforms. Amber Heard Source : Instagram/amberheard Amber Heard also became one of the most controversial actors of the 2020s because of the same public legal battle. Her 2018 op-ed about domestic abuse became central to Depp’s defamation suit, even though the piece did not name him. The Virginia jury found Heard liable for defamation on Depp’s claims, while also finding Depp liable on one of Heard’s counterclaims through a statement made by his former lawyer. Heard’s career and public reputation were heavily affected by the case. Kevin Spacey Source : Shutterstock Kevin Spacey was once one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actors, known for The Usual Suspects, American Beauty, and House of Cards. His career changed after multiple sexual misconduct allegations became public in 2017. Spacey has denied wrongdoing in major legal cases. In 2022, a New York jury found he did not sexually abuse actor Anthony Rapp in 1986. In 2023, a London jury acquitted him of sexual assault charges related to allegations by four men. Even with those legal outcomes, the allegations had a major professional impact. Spacey was removed from House of Cards, and his role in All the Money in the World was famously reshot with Christopher Plummer. Mel Gibson Source : Shutterstock Mel Gibson was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars and directors before a series of public controversies damaged his reputation. The most widely cited moment came after a 2006 DUI arrest, when Gibson made antisemitic remarks. He later apologized and said there was no excuse for antisemitic expression. The backlash was intense because Gibson had already been a major cultural figure through films such as Braveheart, Lethal Weapon, and The Passion of the Christ. Alec Baldwin Source : Shutterstock Alec Baldwin has had several public controversies, but none larger than the fatal Rust shooting. In 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on the set of the Western film Rust after a gun held by Baldwin discharged during rehearsal. Baldwin was later charged with involuntary manslaughter, but in July 2024, a New Mexico judge dismissed the case in the middle of trial and said it could not be filed again. The case became a major Hollywood safety controversy. Miller, known for The Flash and Fantastic Beasts, faced multiple controversies, including arrests in Hawaii and a Vermont case in which they pleaded guilty to a charge connected to a break-in and theft of alcohol. They received probation and a fine in that case. The controversies created major questions for Warner Bros. because Miller was the lead of The Flash, a large-budget superhero film that had already been delayed and reshaped. Shia LaBeouf Source : Shutterstock Shia LaBeouf’s career has been marked by talent, reinvention, and repeated controversy. One of the most serious public matters involved a lawsuit filed by musician and actor FKA Twigs, whose legal name is Tahliah Barnett. She accused LaBeouf of physical and emotional abuse during their relationship. LaBeouf denied responsibility in court filings, and the lawsuit was later settled outside court with confidential terms. Bill Cosby Source : Shutterstock Bill Cosby was once one of America’s most beloved television figures because of The Cosby Show. His reputation later collapsed after numerous women accused him of sexual assault. Cosby was convicted in 2018 in a Pennsylvania sexual assault case, but the state’s highest court overturned the conviction in 2021. The reversal did not erase the public controversy. His career creates one of Hollywood’s longest-running debates about art, awards, crime, exile, and accountability. Woody Allen Source : Shutterstock Woody Allen has remained controversial for decades because of sexual abuse allegations made by Dylan Farrow, which he has repeatedly denied. The controversy became newly prominent during the #MeToo era, when actors and audiences reexamined long-running Hollywood power structures and past allegations. Armie Hammer Source : Shutterstock Armie Hammer’s career changed dramatically in 2021 after allegations and disturbing online claims became public. Hammer left multiple projects, including Shotgun Wedding and The Offer, and was dropped by his agency. Charlie Sheen Source : Instagram/charliesheen Charlie Sheen became one of the most publicly controversial actors of the 2000s and early 2010s. The controversy became part of a larger debate about social media, political expression, employer response, and franchise branding. Katherine Heigl Source : Instagram/katherineheigl Katherine Heigl’s controversies were not criminal, but they had a major effect on how Hollywood discussed her career. After winning an Emmy for Grey’s Anatomy, Heigl later chose not to submit herself for Emmy consideration for the show, saying at the time she did not feel she had been given material that warranted a nomination.
