The Most Controversial Actors in Hollywood History

Hollywood controversy can take many forms.

Sometimes it comes from a public outburst. Sometimes it comes from criminal charges, lawsuits, allegations, offensive comments, on-set incidents, personal conduct, political remarks, or years of tabloid attention.

Not every controversy is the same. Some actors were convicted of crimes. Some were accused and denied wrongdoing. Some were acquitted. Some had cases dismissed. Some faced professional backlash for public comments rather than criminal conduct. Others became controversial because their private lives overwhelmed their work.

Will Smith

Will Smith spent decades as one of Hollywood’s most likable stars before the 2022 Academy Awards changed the public conversation around him.

During the live ceremony, Smith walked onstage and slapped Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. Later that night, Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor for King Richard. The Academy then banned him from attending its events for 10 years, although he remained eligible for nominations and awards. Smith said he accepted and respected the decision.

Johnny Depp
