Hollywood Stars Called Hard to Work With

Michael Michael, May 24, 2026

Some actors get called “difficult” because they are demanding artists.

Others earn that reputation through public clashes, contract disputes, late arrivals, on-set tension, or comments that follow them for years.

A reputation is not the same as a full picture of a person. Some actors have apologized. Some deny the claims. Some were judged more harshly than others because of gender, age, race, or media bias.

Christian Bale’s most famous workplace controversy came from the set of Terminator Salvation.

Audio of Bale yelling at cinematographer Shane Hurlbut spread widely online in 2009. Bale later apologized publicly, calling the outburst “inexcusable” and saying he acted badly.

Chevy Chase has long carried a reputation for being hard to work with.

His time on Community became especially controversial, with public reporting and later accounts describing conflicts with cast and crew. A 2018 Washington Post profile even framed him as a comedy star whose difficult reputation had damaged later opportunities.

Katherine Heigl

Katherine Heigl became one of the most discussed examples of a star labeled “difficult.”

Her comments about Knocked Up and her decision not to submit herself for Emmy consideration for Grey’s Anatomy created industry backlash. Heigl later pushed back on the reputation, saying she was not trying to be rude and that the reaction became bigger than she expected.

Wesley Snipes

Wesley Snipes’ reputation for being difficult is strongly tied to Blade: Trinity.

Co-star Patton Oswalt made widely repeated claims about Snipes’ behavior on set, including allegations that he communicated through Post-it notes. Snipes later denied the allegations, calling them untrue.

Val Kilmer

Val Kilmer was often described as intense and difficult during parts of his career.

Reports around Batman Forever and The Island of Dr. Moreau helped shape that reputation. After Kilmer’s death, his daughter said the difficult label was an unfair or incomplete portrayal, explaining that he was private and very serious about acting.

Edward Norton

Edward Norton has often been described as a highly involved actor who pushes hard on scripts and creative choices.

His exit from the Marvel role of Bruce Banner became part of that reputation. Norton later joked that he was difficult on The Incredible Hulk because he “wanted a better script,” according to public reporting around his Comedy Central roast appearance.

Shia LaBeouf

Shia LaBeouf has had several public workplace conflicts.

One of the clearest involved the Broadway play Orphans, where tension with Alec Baldwin contributed to LaBeouf leaving the production. LaBeouf later reflected on the feud and admitted insecurity and competitiveness played a role.

Dustin Hoffman

Dustin Hoffman’s reputation includes stories of intense and uncomfortable methods.

On Kramer vs. Kramer, Meryl Streep later discussed difficult experiences during filming, and Vanity Fair’s account of the production described a tense creative environment between them.

Marlon Brando was a legendary actor, but he was also known for difficult productions later in his career.

Stories around films such as The Island of Dr. Moreau and Apocalypse Now helped build a reputation for unpredictability, unusual demands, and resistance to normal production routines.

Mike Myers

Mike Myers has faced reports over the years that he can be demanding behind the scenes.

His comedy is precise, heavily character-based, and often dependent on control of tone, accent, and rhythm. That creative intensity may be part of why some collaborators have described working with him as challenging.

Russell Crowe

Russell Crowe has had a public reputation for intensity and temper.

His strongest work often depends on force, confidence, and emotional volatility, but those same qualities have sometimes followed him into off-screen stories. He remains respected as an actor, but “intense” is central to how people discuss him.

Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan’s difficult reputation came largely from missed work, delays, legal issues, and heavily publicized personal struggles during parts of her career.

Much of the coverage around Lohan became tabloid-driven and harsh. But, her career was affected by reliability concerns and personal challenges.

Bruce Willis

Bruce Willis was sometimes described as hard to work with late in his career, but this topic must be handled carefully.

His family later publicly shared that he had aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. That changed how many people looked back at reports about his later work.
