Celebrities Who Were Banned From Talk Shows

Michael Michael, May 26, 2026May 26, 2026

Talk shows are built to look easy.

A guest walks out, waves to the crowd, tells a funny story, promotes a project, and leaves with everyone smiling. But behind the scenes, hosts and producers care deeply about timing, behavior, chemistry, and trust.

When a guest breaks that trust, the invitation can disappear.

Some celebrities were openly banned. Others were reportedly blacklisted, kept away from certain hosts, or quietly avoided after one bad experience.

Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers had one of the most famous talk-show bans in television history.

Rivers was once a favorite guest and regular guest host for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. Their relationship collapsed after she accepted her own late-night show on Fox, The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers, without personally telling Carson first. After that, Carson banned her from The Tonight Show, and the freeze lasted for decades.

Harmony Korine

Harmony Korine’s ban from David Letterman’s show came from one of the strangest backstage stories in late-night history.

Korine had appeared on Letterman several times in the 1990s. Years later, Letterman explained that he banned the filmmaker after allegedly finding him going through Meryl Streep’s purse backstage. Letterman told the story when James Franco asked why Korine had not been back on the show.

Hugh Grant

Hugh Grant was banned from The Daily Show after Jon Stewart described him as a difficult guest.

Grant appeared on the show in 2009 while promoting Did You Hear About the Morgans? Stewart later said Grant complained backstage and criticized the movie clip selected for the interview. Stewart called him his least favorite guest and said he would “never” have him back.

Dax Shepard

Dax Shepard has publicly discussed being banned after a messy 2004 appearance on Conan O’Brien’s late-night show.

Shepard said he was drunk during the pre-interview and the taping, did not understand the cues Conan was giving him, and became a problem on air. Reports on his later comments noted that the incident led to a temporary ban from the show.

Madonna

Madonna was publicly banned by Piers Morgan from his talk shows.

Morgan repeatedly said Madonna was not welcome on his CNN show, and in 2012 he extended the ban to his U.K. show as well after a social media exchange involving her manager. The feud was public, personal, and very much driven by Morgan’s own statements.

Kathy Griffin

Kathy Griffin has said she was banned from The View more than once.

Her relationship with the daytime show has been complicated. She guest-hosted and appeared on the program, but later claimed she had been banned and re-banned after clashes connected to jokes and on-air tension. Griffin said she had been banned multiple times, even though she had also returned to the show in later years.

Jay Leno

Jay Leno eventually became host of The Tonight Show, but reports say Johnny Carson once kept him off the program.

A 2025 book about Carson, Love Johnny Carson, reported that Leno was among the people Carson allegedly banned or sidelined at one point. Coverage of the book said Leno’s early issue involved a poorly received appearance before he later returned and became one of late night’s biggest figures.

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres was also named in recent reporting about Johnny Carson’s alleged unofficial ban list.

According to coverage of Love Johnny Carson, DeGeneres was reportedly dropped after not following Carson’s instructions about her comedy. The details come from later accounts, so this should be framed as an alleged Carson-era blacklist rather than a fully documented public ban from the time.

William Shatner

William Shatner was another star reportedly kept away from Carson’s Tonight Show.

Coverage of Love Johnny Carson said Shatner allegedly violated several on-air rules, which put him on Carson’s informal blacklist. The reports also noted that some people associated with the list later returned during guest-hosted periods or in other contexts.

Paul Reubens

Paul Reubens was not banned in the same way as some other names, but Johnny Carson reportedly kept him off the show because of his Pee-wee Herman persona.

A 2026 report on Love Johnny Carson said Carson had a rule against guests appearing in character unless it was clearly a comedy act. Reubens did appear on The Tonight Show once in 1985, but that episode was hosted by Joan Rivers, not Carson.

Carl Sagan

Carl Sagan was reportedly one of the more surprising names connected to Carson’s informal ban list.

Recent coverage of Love Johnny Carson said Sagan was allegedly sidelined after correcting Carson on air. Carson was known for liking smart guests, but he also protected the rhythm and authority of his show.

Dana Carvey

Dana Carvey was reportedly kept off Carson’s show after parodying him on Saturday Night Live.

According to coverage of Love Johnny Carson, Carvey’s Carson impression was one of the reasons he allegedly landed on the host’s unofficial blacklist. That is a striking detail because impressions are part of comedy culture, but Carson was protective of his image and legacy.

Orson Welles

Orson Welles was also named in reporting about Carson’s alleged ban list.

Welles was one of the most important filmmakers and performers of the 20th century, so his inclusion shows how wide Carson’s personal boundaries could be. Reports around the book said several major figures were sidelined for reasons ranging from poor appearances to personal disrespect or problems with staff.

Jerry Lewis

Jerry Lewis was another major entertainment figure reportedly associated with Carson’s unofficial banned list.

Lewis had a huge career in film, comedy, television, and live performance. Still, reporting on Carson’s guest-list choices suggested that fame did not guarantee access to The Tonight Show.

Steve Allen

Steve Allen’s reported placement on Carson’s alleged blacklist is especially notable because Allen was the first host of The Tonight Show.

According to coverage of Love Johnny Carson, Allen was among the names connected to Carson’s unofficial ban culture. The exact reasons are less publicly familiar than cases like Joan Rivers or Harmony Korine, so the wording should stay cautious.

Bobcat Goldthwait

Bobcat Goldthwait was reportedly one of the performers Carson resisted booking because of character-style comedy.

A 2026 report about Love Johnny Carson said Carson resisted acts such as Paul Reubens, Gilbert Gottfried, and Bobcat Goldthwait because he felt their strong personas could confuse viewers if they appeared as “guests” rather than clearly staged comedy acts.
