Tennis Star Nick Kyrgios Faces Suspension Following Positive Cocaine Test

Michael Michael, August 21, 2026August 21, 2026

Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from professional tennis after testing positive for a cocaine metabolite, with the former Wimbledon finalist publicly accepting responsibility and apologizing to his family, fans and young supporters.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency confirmed the suspension on August 19, revealing that the 31-year-old Australian provided the sample during the Mallorca Championships in June. The development represents another major setback for Kyrgios, whose career has already been severely disrupted by injuries in recent years.

According to the ITIA, Kyrgios provided a sample on June 22 while competing at the ATP 250 tournament in Mallorca, Spain.

A World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited laboratory subsequently analyzed the sample. On July 17, the laboratory confirmed the presence of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.

Cocaine is classified as a stimulant and a substance of abuse on WADA’s Prohibited List. Under tennis anti-doping regulations, it is prohibited during competition.

The ITIA emphasized that different sanctioning considerations can apply when a substance of abuse was consumed outside competition.

A Mandatory Suspension Began in August

Because of the substance involved, Kyrgios became subject to a mandatory provisional suspension beginning August 4.

The ITIA said Kyrgios has the right to appeal that provisional suspension but had not done so as of its August 19 announcement.

While provisionally suspended, Kyrgios cannot compete in, coach at or attend tournaments sanctioned or organized by the ATP, WTA, Grand Slams, national tennis associations or other World Tennis bodies.

Importantly, the ITIA announcement concerns a provisional suspension. It did not announce a final period of ineligibility for Kyrgios.

Kyrgios Says He Takes Full Responsibility

Following news of the positive test, Kyrgios addressed the situation publicly and acknowledged making a serious mistake.

“I made a huge mistake and take full responsibility for it,” he wrote in a statement shared on social media.

Kyrgios also apologized to those closest to him and acknowledged the example his actions could set for younger followers.

He said he was particularly sorry to the children who follow his career, adding that he was “deeply disappointed” in himself.

The response marks a significant moment for an athlete who has spent much of his career under intense public scrutiny for both his exceptional talent and controversial moments on court.

Injuries Have Taken a Heavy Toll

Kyrgios also discussed the difficult circumstances surrounding the later stages of his career, although he made clear that those struggles did not excuse his actions.

The Australian has endured an extended series of physical problems that have prevented him from playing anything close to a full schedule.

He underwent major wrist surgery after suffering a serious ligament injury and has faced additional knee, abdominal and wrist problems during his attempts to return to consistent competition.

Kyrgios said the prolonged injury battle had affected him both physically and mentally, leaving him struggling to reconcile what he wanted to accomplish with what his body could still handle.

However, he explicitly stopped short of presenting those difficulties as justification for the positive test.

His Career Has Changed Dramatically Since Wimbledon

The suspension comes only four years after Kyrgios enjoyed the greatest Grand Slam run of his singles career.

At Wimbledon in 2022, he reached his first men’s singles Grand Slam final, eventually losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets.

That season also saw Kyrgios reach the US Open quarterfinals and appeared to signal a new phase in his career. Instead, injuries soon dramatically reduced his time on court.

The ITIA notes that Kyrgios reached his career-high singles ranking of world No. 13 in October 2016.

His combination of powerful serving, unconventional shot-making and unpredictable performances made him one of tennis’s most recognizable personalities even when his ranking did not reflect his level of fame.

His 2026 Season Had Already Been Limited

Even before the suspension, Kyrgios had barely competed during the 2026 season.

His physical problems continued to make sustained competition difficult, adding to questions about how much longer his professional career might continue.

Kyrgios acknowledged those concerns in his statement, saying injuries had left him confronting the possibility that he was approaching the end of his playing career.

That context makes the provisional suspension another significant obstacle to any attempted comeback.

What Happens Next for Kyrgios?

For now, Kyrgios remains provisionally suspended while the anti-doping process continues.

The distinction between a provisional suspension and a final sanction is important. The ITIA’s August 19 announcement confirmed the test result and restrictions currently placed on Kyrgios but did not establish his ultimate punishment.

The eventual outcome can depend on circumstances established through the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme, including when and why a substance of abuse was used.

Whatever happens next, Kyrgios has not challenged the seriousness of his situation publicly. Instead, he has accepted responsibility and apologized while acknowledging the personal difficulties he has experienced during an injury-plagued period.

For a player whose career has repeatedly mixed extraordinary talent with unexpected setbacks, the positive test now creates one of the biggest uncertainties yet about whether fans will see Kyrgios competing regularly again.
