Dave Bautista Takes Over as Kratos After Ryan Hurst’s Injury Forces Major God of War Recast

Dave Bautista has officially found his next major franchise role. The former WWE star and Guardians of the Galaxy actor will play Kratos in Prime Video’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of God of War, replacing Ryan Hurst after an injury forced the production to make a significant change.

Bautista’s casting was confirmed on August 20 after several weeks of reports that he was negotiating for the role. The change comes at a complicated point for the ambitious Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television production, which had already begun filming with Hurst as its leading man.

Ryan Hurst Was Originally Cast as Kratos

Hurst was announced as Kratos in January 2026 and had already undergone a major physical transformation to portray the famously imposing Spartan warrior.

Production began in Vancouver in February, and Prime Video even released an early look at Hurst in character. However, filming suffered a major setback when the actor sustained an injury on set in June.

According to Variety, Hurst tore his bicep and required surgery. His recovery would have prevented production from restarting until sometime in 2027.

Rather than postpone the project for that length of time, Amazon and Sony decided to recast Kratos.

Dave Bautista Is Officially the New Kratos

Bautista initially emerged as a potential replacement in early August, when Variety and Deadline reported that he was negotiating to take over the part.

Those negotiations have now resulted in a deal.

The 57-year-old actor is officially set to lead God of War as Kratos, giving Prime Video a performer with extensive experience combining physically demanding action roles with dramatic performances.

Bautista first became internationally famous through professional wrestling before establishing himself as an actor. His breakthrough Hollywood role came as Drax in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, but he has subsequently pursued more dramatic material.

His credits include Blade Runner 2049, Dune, Dune: Part Two, Knock at the Cabin and the Glass Onion installment of the Knives Out franchise.

Previously Filmed Kratos Scenes Will Need to Be Redone

Changing a show’s main actor after production has already begun creates a much bigger challenge than an ordinary casting announcement.

Hurst had reportedly completed substantial work before his injury. With Bautista taking over, scenes previously filmed with Hurst will need to be reshot. Variety reported that production is expected to resume in the coming weeks.

The project remains a major commitment for Prime Video.

Amazon has already given God of War a two-season order, with the seasons planned to film back-to-back.

That makes finding an actor capable of committing to the physically demanding lead role particularly important.

The Series Will Explore Kratos and Atreus’ Relationship

Rather than beginning with the Greek mythology storyline of the earliest God of War games, the television adaptation is expected to focus on the franchise’s more recent Norse era.

That period began with the critically acclaimed 2018 God of War game and continued with 2022’s God of War Ragnarök.

At the heart of the story is the relationship between Kratos and his young son, Atreus.

Callum Vinson is playing Atreus in the television adaptation. The series will follow father and son as they embark on a journey connected to the death of Atreus’ mother while encountering dangerous figures from Norse mythology.

That means Bautista’s performance will require more than the intimidating physical presence traditionally associated with Kratos.

The later games transformed the character into an older father struggling to control his violent past while teaching his son to become a better person.

The Cast Already Includes Several Major Names

Bautista joins an increasingly recognizable ensemble.

Mandy Patinkin is among the cast as Odin, while Ed Skrein will portray Baldur and Teresa Palmer is playing Sif. Sonya Walger has also been cast as Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother.

Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Moore has considerable experience developing ambitious genre television, with previous credits including Battlestar Galactica, Outlander and For All Mankind.

The combination of an established showrunner, a two-season commitment and a large ensemble demonstrates the scale Amazon and Sony are envisioning for the adaptation.

Hurst Already Had a Connection to God of War

Hurst’s departure carries an additional twist because God of War wasn’t a completely new franchise for him.

Before being cast as Kratos, the Sons of Anarchy actor had already provided the voice and motion-capture performance for Thor in God of War Ragnarök.

His performance received significant recognition, making his eventual casting as Kratos an intriguing transition from one major character in the franchise to another.

His departure was therefore caused by unfortunate circumstances rather than a creative decision about his performance.

Bautista Now Faces One of His Biggest Roles

Kratos is among modern gaming’s most recognizable characters, meaning Bautista is stepping into a role accompanied by enormous expectations.

His wrestling background gives him the physical experience required for a character built around brutal combat, but his increasingly dramatic film career could prove equally important.

The modern version of Kratos is defined as much by regret, fatherhood and emotional restraint as he is by strength.

Production is expected to resume in Vancouver after the casting change, although Prime Video has not yet announced a premiere date.

For Bautista, God of War represents another major franchise after Marvel and Dune. For the series itself, his arrival provides a path forward after an injury threatened to push production well into 2027.
