John Stamos Turns 63 With a Shirtless Birthday Selfie That Has Fans Saying “Have Mercy”

Michael Michael, August 25, 2026August 25, 2026

John Stamos celebrated his 63rd birthday by giving his social media followers an unexpected present of their own. The Full House favorite marked the occasion with a striking black-and-white mirror selfie that immediately had fans talking.

The actor turned 63 on August 19 and kept the caption remarkably simple, writing only “63.” The photograph did the rest, showing Stamos posing shirtless with his phone covering much of his face while displaying his toned physique. The post quickly generated playful reactions, birthday wishes and plenty of references to his beloved Full House character, Jesse Katsopolis.

Stamos Kept His Birthday Message Very Simple

Unlike some of his more reflective birthday posts from previous years, Stamos didn’t accompany his latest picture with a lengthy message about getting older.

Instead, the actor posted the monochrome bathroom mirror selfie and simply acknowledged his new age.

The picture was carefully framed, showing his arms, abdomen and signature hair while cropping the image below his stomach. PEOPLE reported that Stamos also spent part of his birthday reposting messages from friends and loved ones through his Instagram Stories.

Among those sending him birthday wishes were longtime Full House costar Dave Coulier and Jimmy Fallon.

Fans Couldn’t Resist the Uncle Jesse Jokes

It didn’t take long for the comments section to fill with reactions.

According to In Touch, one follower jokingly described the photograph as a Stamos “thirst trap,” while another responded with “have mercy,” borrowing Uncle Jesse’s famous Full House catchphrase.

Another fan came up with a variation on his character’s name, calling him “Uncle Yes-se.”

Kelly Rizzo, the widow of Stamos’ late friend and Full House costar Bob Saget, also joined the conversation. She jokingly wondered what Saget would have said about the revealing birthday photograph before wishing Stamos a happy birthday.

The reaction reflected the enduring connection between Stamos and the sitcom that made him a household name. He played Jesse Katsopolis throughout Full House from 1987 until 1995 and later reprised the role in Netflix’s Fuller House.

His Wife Celebrated Him in a Different Way

Stamos’ wife, Caitlin McHugh Stamos, offered a more sentimental tribute to her husband.

She described him as “one of earth’s best humans” and revealed that although he hadn’t wanted a traditional birthday celebration this year, his family had other plans.

McHugh said they were turning the occasion into multiple days of celebrations. One of their activities involved visiting Cosm Los Angeles for its Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory Shared Reality experience.

Stamos and McHugh have been married since 2018 and share their 8-year-old son, Billy.

Family life has become an increasingly prominent part of the actor’s public reflections as he has grown older.

Birthday Selfies Are Becoming a Stamos Tradition

Anyone who followed Stamos’ birthday celebrations last year might not have been completely surprised by his latest photograph.

When he turned 62 in August 2025, the actor celebrated by posting another memorable shower picture. That photograph showed him taking an outdoor rooftop shower at New York City’s Bowery Hotel while wearing black Calvin Klein underwear.

His message that year was considerably more reflective.

Stamos wrote about appreciating laughter, love and gratitude as he entered another year of his life and thanked everyone who had sent him birthday wishes.

Entertainment Weekly notes that the playful tradition actually stretches further back. Stamos also shared a revealing birthday photograph when he turned 60 in 2023, although he skipped the approach for his 61st birthday.

Stamos Has Spoken Openly About Aging

The actor’s confident birthday posts come as he has increasingly discussed his approach to health and getting older.

Stamos has credited several lifestyle changes with helping him feel healthier, including exercise, getting enough sleep and maintaining his sobriety. He has also spoken about the positive influence of becoming a husband and father later in life.

His life today is markedly different from the period of his career when audiences first knew him as the motorcycle-riding, Elvis-loving Uncle Jesse.

Yet nearly four decades after Full House premiered, the character remains so closely associated with Stamos that fans still immediately reach for Jesse’s signature catchphrases whenever the actor gives them an opportunity.

Another Major Project Is on the Way

Stamos also has something new to celebrate professionally.

He recently revealed his debut children’s picture book, Love From Above: A Story of Tiny Birds and Their Big Meaning. The project is particularly personal because he developed it with Billy, making it the father and son’s first creative collaboration. The book is scheduled for publication in April 2027.

Stamos previously explored his life and career in his 2023 memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, but the children’s book represents a very different kind of project.

For the moment, though, his 63rd birthday selfie has taken center stage. With one photograph and a one-word caption, Stamos managed to turn another birthday into a viral celebration and remind longtime fans why Uncle Jesse’s famous “have mercy” line still follows him decades later.
