Actors Who Auditioned for One Role but Got Another

Casting does not always go in a straight line.

Sometimes an actor walks into an audition room hoping for one part, but the casting team sees something completely different. Maybe the actor does not fit the lead. Maybe their energy works better for the villain. Maybe they are too funny, too sharp, too intense, or too strange for the role they first wanted.

That does not mean the audition failed. In many cases, it means the actor was remembered.

Here are actors who auditioned for one role but got another.

Tom Hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston’s Marvel story could have looked very different.

Before becoming Loki, he auditioned for Thor. The idea is strange now because Chris Hemsworth feels so naturally tied to the role of the thunder god. Hiddleston, however, made a stronger impression as Thor’s complicated brother.

Sandra Oh

Sandra Oh originally auditioned for Miranda Bailey on Grey’s Anatomy, but she was later connected to Cristina Yang instead.

That change shaped the entire show. Cristina became sharp, ambitious, brilliant, guarded, funny, and emotionally complex. Oh’s performance helped make her one of the most loved characters in the series.

Courteney Cox

Courteney Cox was first considered for Rachel Green on Friends, but she ended up playing Monica Geller.

That switch changed sitcom history. Rachel became Jennifer Aniston’s breakout role, while Monica gave Cox a character with control issues, warmth, competitiveness, loyalty, and some of the show’s funniest physical comedy.

Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams auditioned for Cady Heron in Mean Girls, but she was cast as Regina George.

That decision helped make the movie work. Cady needed someone who could feel innocent and observant, while Regina needed someone who could be beautiful, intimidating, funny, manipulative, and oddly magnetic.

Rainn Wilson

Rainn Wilson read for Michael Scott on The Office before being cast as Dwight Schrute.

It is funny to imagine because Michael and Dwight need very different kinds of chaos. Michael is needy, desperate to be loved, and socially lost. Dwight is rigid, intense, loyal, strange, competitive, and completely committed to his own worldview.

Liza Weil

Liza Weil originally auditioned for Rory Gilmore on Gilmore Girls, but she was eventually cast as Paris Geller.

That was a major win for the show. Rory needed softness, curiosity, and quiet ambition. Paris needed fire. Weil gave Paris speed, pressure, insecurity, intelligence, anger, and a surprising amount of vulnerability.

Jensen Ackles

Jensen Ackles first auditioned for Sam Winchester on Supernatural before ending up as Dean.

That shift helped define the entire show. Sam needed sensitivity, conflict, and a pull toward a different life. Dean needed swagger, humor, loyalty, fear, anger, and a deep need to protect his family.

Chelsea Peretti

Chelsea Peretti originally auditioned for Rosa Diaz on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but she was cast as Gina Linetti.

That was a very different role. Rosa became deadpan, private, intimidating, and quietly emotional in Stephanie Beatriz’s hands. Gina, meanwhile, needed someone who could play total self-belief as a comedy weapon.

Norman Reedus

Norman Reedus originally auditioned for Merle Dixon on The Walking Dead, but the role went to Michael Rooker.

The producers liked Reedus enough to create Daryl Dixon, Merle’s younger brother. That decision became one of the biggest casting wins in the show’s history.

Sonequa Martin-Green

Sonequa Martin-Green auditioned for Michonne on The Walking Dead, but she was later cast as Sasha.

Michonne went to Danai Gurira, who made the katana-wielding survivor one of the show’s standout characters. Martin-Green’s Sasha became a different kind of force: disciplined, grieving, loyal, guarded, and shaped by loss.

Liam Hemsworth

Liam Hemsworth originally auditioned for Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games, but he ended up playing Gale Hawthorne.

That switch made sense. Peeta needed softness, emotional openness, and quiet moral strength. Gale needed intensity, anger, loyalty, and the feeling of someone shaped by survival.

Laura Prepon

Laura Prepon auditioned for Piper Chapman on Orange Is the New Black, but she was later cast as Alex Vause.

That change gave the show a stronger contrast. Piper needed someone who could play sheltered confusion and slow moral unraveling. Alex needed coolness, regret, danger, humor, and emotional history.

Natasha Lyonne

Iwan Rheon auditioned for Jon Snow on Game of Thrones, but the role went to Kit Harington.

Rheon later joined the show as Ramsay Bolton, one of its most hated villains. That is a dramatic casting turn. Jon Snow required quiet nobility, uncertainty, duty, and restraint. Ramsay required cruelty, charm, sadism, and psychological control.

Tom Felton

Tom Felton first auditioned for Harry Potter and Ron Weasley before being cast as Draco Malfoy.

That final decision shaped the early Harry Potter films. Harry needed innocence and burden. Ron needed warmth and comic fear. Draco needed arrogance, insecurity, entitlement, and a sharp sense of rivalry.

Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy auditioned for Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, but Christopher Nolan and the team ultimately cast Christian Bale.
