Actors Who Became Bigger Because of Netflix

Michael Michael, June 5, 2026June 5, 2026

Netflix changed what it means to become famous.

Before streaming, an actor often needed a hit network show, a studio movie, or years of smaller roles to reach a global audience. Netflix made that path faster. A series could drop in one week and turn an actor into a worldwide name before the next Monday.

Some of these stars were already working actors. A few were known in their home countries. Others had loyal fan bases from earlier projects. But Netflix gave them something bigger: instant international reach.

Here are actors whose careers became bigger because of Netflix.

Millie Bobby Brown

Millie Bobby Brown became one of Netflix’s first true global breakout stars.

Before Stranger Things, she had small television roles. After playing Eleven, she became the emotional face of one of Netflix’s biggest franchises. Netflix’s own Tudum site describes Stranger Things as Brown’s breakout role, noting that she grew up alongside the character over a decade.

Jenna Ortega

Jenna Ortega was already building a strong career before Wednesday, but Netflix turned her into a global pop culture figure.

As Wednesday Addams, Ortega carried a series that became Netflix’s most popular English-language show ever, with more than 252 million views in its first 91 days, according to Reuters. Season 2 also brought her an executive producer credit, showing how much creative influence she gained after the first season’s success.

Lee Jung-jae

Lee Jung-jae was already a major star in South Korea before Squid Game.

Netflix made him a global name.

His role as Seong Gi-hun put him at the center of one of the biggest international TV hits ever. Squid Game later made Emmy history, and Lee became the first Asian actor to win Best Actor in a Drama Series at the Emmys.

Anya Taylor-Joy

Anya Taylor-Joy had already earned attention through The Witch, Split, and Emma.

Then The Queen’s Gambit turned her into a mainstream star.

The Hollywood Reporter described her as the breakout star of Netflix’s most popular limited series at the time. Her performance as Beth Harmon made chess feel dramatic, stylish, and emotionally tense, while giving Taylor-Joy one of the clearest star-making roles of the streaming era.

Regé-Jean Page

Regé-Jean Page became a sensation almost overnight because of Bridgerton.

The first season of the Shondaland romance became Netflix’s biggest hit at the time, with 82 million households watching in its first 28 days and the show reaching No. 1 in 83 countries. Page’s role as Simon Basset made him the breakout face of the season.

Phoebe Dynevor

Phoebe Dynevor also became much bigger because of Bridgerton.

As Daphne Bridgerton, she anchored the first season opposite Regé-Jean Page. Before the series, she had worked in British television, but Bridgerton gave her global recognition. People notes that the first season streamed in 82 million households and that Dynevor’s Daphne was central to that debut season.

Jonathan Bailey

Nicola Coughlan was already beloved by many viewers because of Derry Girls, but Netflix helped expand her audience.

Derry Girls reached many international viewers through Netflix, while Bridgerton turned her into one of the platform’s most recognizable ensemble stars. Her role as Penelope Featherington grew from comic supporting player to romantic lead, and Season 3 centered on Penelope and Colin Bridgerton.

Taylor Schilling became far more visible through Orange Is the New Black.

The show was one of Netflix’s early prestige hits and helped prove that streaming originals could compete with cable and network television. Schilling’s Piper Chapman was the entry point for the series, even as the ensemble later became the show’s real strength.

Uzo Aduba

Uzo Aduba’s career changed dramatically because of Orange Is the New Black.

Her role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren could have been a small supporting part. Instead, Aduba turned it into one of the show’s most memorable performances. She won major awards for the role and became one of the clearest breakout stars from the series.

Finn Wolfhard became famous through Stranger Things.

As Mike Wheeler, he was part of the young ensemble that helped make the show feel like a mix of horror, adventure, friendship, and 1980s nostalgia. Netflix’s global reach meant Wolfhard did not just become a teen TV actor. He became part of a worldwide franchise.

Sadie Sink

Sadie Sink joined Stranger Things in Season 2, but her career grew sharply as the show continued.

Her role as Max Mayfield became more emotionally central over time, especially in Season 4. That season’s success introduced her to an even wider audience and helped lead to more serious film attention, including The Whale.

Noah Centineo

Noah Centineo became a Netflix romantic-comedy star almost instantly.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before turned him into a teen heartthrob, and Netflix quickly built more titles around his appeal. The film’s popularity made Centineo a familiar name to younger audiences and helped revive interest in streaming teen rom-coms.

Lana Condor

Lana Condor also became much bigger because of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.

As Lara Jean Covey, she carried the emotional center of the film and helped make the trilogy feel warm, sincere, and rewatchable. The role gave Condor a fan base that extended well beyond the usual teen-romance audience.

Penn Badgley

Penn Badgley was already famous from Gossip Girl, but Netflix gave him a second wave of fame with You.

The series originally aired on Lifetime, but it became much bigger after moving to Netflix. Badgley’s role as Joe Goldberg became one of streaming’s most discussed performances because it mixed charm, danger, satire, and discomfort.

Katherine Langford

Katherine Langford became a breakout name through 13 Reasons Why.

The Netflix drama was controversial, widely watched, and heavily discussed. Langford’s role as Hannah Baker put her at the center of a serious teen drama conversation and gave her a level of visibility that a newcomer rarely gets so quickly.

Omar Sy was already a major French star before Netflix’s Lupin.

But Lupin turned him into a wider international streaming figure. The French mystery series became one of Netflix’s biggest non-English-language hits, and Sy’s charm as Assane Diop was central to why the show traveled so well.
