Actors Who Fired Their Agents After Career Mistakes Michael, June 4, 2026June 4, 2026 An agent can shape an actor’s entire career. They decide which scripts get passed along. They negotiate money. They advise on roles. They help protect momentum when a star is rising, stuck, or trying to rebuild. But sometimes the advice is wrong. Sometimes a script never reaches the actor. Sometimes a role gets rejected for money, timing, or image reasons and later becomes a major turning point for someone else. Some stars directly said they fired an agent. Others changed representation, fired a manager, or rebuilt their team after a painful career moment. James Woods Source : Shutterstock James Woods has one of Hollywood’s most famous agent-firing stories. Quentin Tarantino reportedly wanted Woods for Reservoir Dogs and made several offers. According to later accounts, Woods’ agent rejected the offers without telling him, reportedly because the money was too low. When Woods later learned what had happened, he fired his agent. Bruce Willis Source : Shutterstock Bruce Willis later named The English Patient as one of the major roles he regretted passing on. Willis said he had been talked out of working with director Anthony Minghella by his agent. The role he passed on went to Willem Dafoe, while The English Patient went on to win nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Reports based on Willis’ comments say he fired the agent after that missed opportunity. Burt Reynolds Source : Commons Wikimedia Burt Reynolds fired his agent after Boogie Nights, but not for the reason many people might expect. The role brought Reynolds some of the best reviews of his later career and earned him an Oscar nomination. Yet Reynolds personally disliked the film and had reportedly turned it down several times before finally accepting. After seeing a rough cut, he was so unhappy that he fired his agent. Debi Mazar Source : Shutterstock Debi Mazar has said she lost out on The Wedding Singer because of her agent’s advice. Mazar recalled that she had been offered the role of Holly Sullivan and wanted to do the movie because she was a fan of Adam Sandler. Her agent advised her not to accept because the pay was not high enough. Mazar passed, Christine Taylor got the role, and the film became one of Sandler’s most loved romantic comedies. Mazar later said she apologized to Sandler and fired her agent. Pamela Anderson Source : Shutterstock Pamela Anderson nearly missed The Last Showgirl because her then-agent turned down the script without showing it to her. Gia Coppola wanted Anderson for the lead role, but Anderson later said the agent rejected the project within an hour and never passed it along. The script reached Anderson through her son Brandon Thomas Lee, and the film became one of the most respected acting moments of her career. Colman Domingo Source : Shutterstock Colman Domingo has spoken about a painful low point after losing a small role on Boardwalk Empire. Domingo said he auditioned for a part as a maître d’ at a Black-owned nightclub, only to be told the show passed because he was not light-skinned enough for what they considered historically accurate. He said the rejection nearly made him quit acting. Mark Ruffalo Source : Shutterstock Mark Ruffalo fired his agent and manager when he thought he was done with acting. After directing Sympathy for Delicious, Ruffalo said he loved directing so much that he quit acting, fired his agent and manager, and planned to focus on filmmaking instead. Then The Kids Are All Right earned him his first Oscar nomination, and everything changed. Sally Field Source : Shutterstock Sally Field’s early career pivot came after representation underestimated her. When Field wanted to move from television into film, she said people around her dismissed the idea. Variety asked her about firing her first agent because he said she was not good enough for movies, and Field explained that she knew she had to escape the public image created by her early TV work. Bill Murray Source : Shutterstock Bill Murray’s relationship with Hollywood representation became famous because he stepped away from the normal agent system. Murray has long been known for not having a conventional agent and instead using an elusive phone number that filmmakers must call if they want to reach him. Time described how director Paul Feig had to navigate Murray’s unusual no-agent process while trying to secure him for the 2016 Ghostbusters cameo. Hugh Grant Source : Shutterstock Hugh Grant has joked publicly about firing agents and even pretending to be his own representative. Reports about Grant’s story say he operated under the fictional name “James Howe Ealy” while acting as his own agent for a period. That unusual move reflected his discomfort with the agent system and his desire to control his own negotiations. Barbra Streisand Source : Shutterstock Barbra Streisand’s split from legendary agent Sue Mengers became one of Hollywood’s most famous star-agent breakups. Mengers had helped shape major parts of Streisand’s career, but the relationship grew strained around creative differences, including Streisand’s desire to direct and star in Yentl. Vanity Fair described the breakup as a major turning point in the careers of both women. Featured Image Source : Shutterstock Entertainment & Media
