Actors Who Follow Strict Diets for Roles

Michael Michael, May 18, 2026May 18, 2026

Some acting transformations happen through makeup, costumes, accents, or prosthetics.

Others happen through the body.

For certain roles, actors have followed strict diets, gained weight, lost weight, built muscle, cut body fat, or changed their eating habits under intense pressure. Sometimes the goal is to look like an athlete. Sometimes it is to portray illness, isolation, survival, aging, or physical decline.

Extreme role diets can be risky, and they should not be copied. Actors often work with doctors, trainers, nutritionists, stunt teams, studio schedules, and resources most people do not have.

Christian Bale’s transformation for The Machinist remains one of the most famous examples of extreme role dieting.

He played Trevor Reznik, a factory worker suffering from severe insomnia and psychological collapse. To create the character’s gaunt appearance, Bale lost a dramatic amount of weight before filming. In interviews around the movie, he discussed losing roughly a third of his body weight for the role and described how the transformation affected the way he moved and felt.

Matthew McConaughey followed a strict weight-loss plan to play Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club.

The role required him to portray a man diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in the 1980s, and McConaughey lost around 50 pounds for the part. He initially aimed for 145 pounds but dropped closer to 135, while also consulting a nutritionist during the process.

Jared Leto also underwent a major physical transformation for Dallas Buyers Club.

He played Rayon, a transgender woman living with HIV/AIDS, and said he lost around 40 pounds for the role. In an interview with The Guardian, Leto said the transformation changed how he walked, sat, and felt in the world.

Anne Hathaway followed an extremely strict diet for her role as Fantine in Les Misérables.

Fantine is a starving, desperate woman whose life collapses under poverty and exploitation. Hathaway said she ate dried oatmeal paste as part of the process and lost about 25 pounds for the role.

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman’s preparation for Black Swan combined ballet training with a very strict physical routine.

She played Nina Sayers, a ballerina chasing perfection while losing her sense of reality. Vogue reported that Portman trained for up to eight hours a day, six days a week, with former New York City Ballet dancer Mary Helen Bowers helping her develop a ballet-like body and movement style.

Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis also followed a strict diet and intense training routine for Black Swan.

She played Lily, a more relaxed and sensual contrast to Natalie Portman’s Nina. In later reflections on the film, Kunis said her preparation involved a lot of dancing and very little eating, while reporting around the film’s anniversary described the physical pressure and restricted diet she followed for the role.

Tom Hanks changed his body dramatically for Cast Away.

The production was structured around his transformation. Filming began with Hanks at a heavier weight, then paused so he could lose weight, grow out his hair, and return to play Chuck Noland after years stranded on an island.

Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro’s transformation for Raging Bull became legendary.

To play boxer Jake LaMotta across different stages of life, De Niro first trained seriously as a boxer. Then, for LaMotta’s later years, he gained around 60 pounds. Public production accounts describe the weight gain as part of the film’s effort to show LaMotta’s physical decline after his fighting prime.

Zac Efron

Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine routine became one of the defining superhero-body stories of the 2000s and 2010s.

Across multiple X-Men films, Jackman followed strict training and nutrition plans to maintain Logan’s muscular, rugged look. He has also publicly warned people not to copy the dehydration tactics used before shirtless scenes, calling attention to the fact that some screen-ready looks are temporary and unsafe outside professional supervision.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron has changed her body for several roles, but she has also spoken honestly about the cost.

For Monster, she transformed physically to play Aileen Wuornos, using weight gain, makeup, prosthetics, and performance choices to move far from her glamorous public image. Years later, while discussing aging and role transformations with Allure, Theron said she would never again gain 40 pounds for a movie, explaining how much harder it became to lose weight later in life after gaining for Tully.

Creed was not just a sports movie. It was a continuation of the Rocky legacy, which meant boxing had to feel serious. Jordan had to look like a fighter, move like a fighter, and carry the emotional pressure of a young man trying to build his own name. His diet supported that physical transformation.

Taylor Lautner’s body change for New Moon became a major part of the film’s publicity.
