Belgian content creator Michiel Vandeweert, who became known for openly documenting his life with the rare genetic condition progeria, has died at age 28. His family confirmed his death in a statement reported by Flemish public broadcaster VRT NWS on August 10, 2026.

Vandeweert’s life attracted attention far beyond his hometown of Diepenbeek, Belgium. Diagnosed with progeria as a young child, he had reportedly been told that he might live only until around age 12. Instead, he more than doubled that age, building an online following, publishing a book and appearing in a documentary alongside his younger sister Amber.

Vandeweert’s family announced that he had died at 28, with the news subsequently reported across Belgian media.

According to VRT NWS, his family described him as someone who lived fully despite the extraordinary medical circumstances he faced. He had become one of Belgium’s most recognizable people living with progeria and regularly spoke publicly about the condition.

His visibility eventually extended to social media, where he shared parts of his everyday life rather than allowing his diagnosis to become his only identity.

He Was Diagnosed With Progeria as a Child

Progeria, formally known as Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, is an extremely rare genetic condition characterized by accelerated aging beginning in childhood.

The Progeria Research Foundation explains that children with the condition generally appear healthy at birth before characteristics of accelerated aging begin emerging during their early years. Cardiovascular complications are among the most serious health concerns associated with the disorder.

Mayo Clinic similarly describes progeria as a progressive genetic disorder and notes that there is currently no cure.

Doctors Reportedly Expected Him to Live to About 12

One of the most remarkable aspects of Vandeweert’s story was his longevity.

VRT NWS reported that doctors initially told his family he was expected to live to approximately 12. Vandeweert ultimately reached 28, making his experience particularly unusual among people diagnosed with the condition.

Rather than allowing that early prognosis to dictate how he approached life, Vandeweert developed numerous interests and pursued a highly public career.

He became particularly interested in gaming, technology, cars and soccer, while his social-media presence gave followers a window into both his hobbies and his experiences with progeria.

He Built an Online Community

Vandeweert established audiences across Instagram, YouTube and Twitch, where his content included gaming as well as discussions about his personal life.

His combined audience reportedly exceeded 90,000 followers.

That platform gave him an opportunity to increase awareness of a disorder most people will never encounter personally. But his online identity was not solely centered on illness. Gaming and other everyday interests remained important parts of the content he shared.

His approach allowed viewers to see the person behind the diagnosis rather than reducing his life to a medical condition.

He Published His Story as a Teenager

Vandeweert had already begun sharing his experiences long before becoming an established social-media personality.

At approximately 15, he published Ik Ben Michiel, or I Am Michiel, recounting aspects of growing up knowing that doctors had predicted a dramatically shortened life expectancy.

His story later reached audiences through another medium.

Michiel and his younger sister Amber, who also lives with progeria, became the subjects of the documentary How to Be Alive: Amber and Michiel. The production followed the siblings and provided an intimate look at how they navigated everyday life while living with the rare condition.

Soccer was another major passion in Vandeweert’s life, particularly his support for Belgian club KRC Genk.

Following news of his death, the club publicly paid tribute to its longtime supporter, describing Vandeweert’s courage and positive outlook as an inspiration to others.

The club also extended condolences to Amber, his parents and the rest of his family and friends.

Diepenbeek Mayor Rik Kriekels similarly reflected on the way Vandeweert approached life, telling VRT NWS that people could only admire how he lived despite his circumstances.

His Story Reached Far Beyond His Diagnosis

Vandeweert’s death has prompted tributes not simply because he lived significantly longer than doctors originally predicted, but because of what he chose to do with those years.

He became an author, content creator, gamer, documentary subject and passionate sports supporter while helping introduce a wider audience to the realities of progeria.

His public life also helped challenge assumptions about what someone living with a serious rare disorder could pursue.

Vandeweert was 28, an age doctors reportedly once believed he would never reach. His story ultimately became about considerably more than surpassing a prognosis. Through his book, documentary appearances and years of online content, he left behind a record of a life determined not to be defined solely by its limitations.
