Boy George Faces Backlash After Making Unsupported Claim About Dua Lipa and Israel

Boy George has sparked another controversy surrounding his outspoken support for Israel after attributing an inflammatory statement to fellow British pop star Dua Lipa without providing credible evidence that she ever made it.

The Culture Club singer made the accusation on social media while responding to criticism surrounding his recently released pro-Israel song, “We Will Dance Again.” His comments quickly attracted questions about where the alleged Dua Lipa quote originated, particularly because Lipa has spoken publicly about Palestinian rights but there is no reliable record of her making the statement Boy George attributed to her.

Boy George Made the Claim on Social Media

The controversy intensified on August 6 when Boy George questioned why he was receiving criticism for publicly defending Jewish people.

In his post, he tagged Lipa and claimed she had said Israel “should be wiped off the face of the earth.”

That allegation immediately prompted users to ask Boy George for evidence.

Rather than linking to an interview, video, social-media post or established news report containing such a statement from Lipa, Boy George reportedly shared screenshots featuring photographs of the singer accompanied by text claiming she had said there would be no peace while Israel continued to exist.

The screenshots did not establish that Lipa had actually made the remarks.

No Credible Evidence Supports the Dua Lipa Quote

Dua Lipa has been an outspoken supporter of Palestinian rights, but her documented public statements are considerably different from the words Boy George attributed to her.

There is currently no credible interview, verified social-media post or reputable news report showing Lipa saying Israel should be “wiped off the face of the Earth.”

That distinction is particularly important given the seriousness of the alleged statement.

Lipa has previously called for a ceasefire in Gaza and spoken critically about Israel’s military campaign. She has also publicly rejected accusations of antisemitism while expressing support for Palestinian human rights.

Criticizing the Israeli government or supporting Palestinian statehood, however, does not establish that someone has called for Israel’s destruction.

Without evidence directly connecting Lipa to the quotation, Boy George’s allegation remains unsupported.

The dispute follows the July 26 release of Boy George’s “We Will Dance Again,” a reggae-influenced song expressing solidarity with Israel and Jewish communities.

The track references the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attacks and particularly the massacre at the Nova music festival.

Boy George also challenges criticism of Israel’s subsequent military campaign in Gaza.

One of the song’s opening lines contrasts the description of the conflict as genocide with Boy George’s characterization of it as war.

The song also criticizes musicians who have publicly supported Palestine and concludes with an explicit declaration of Boy George’s support for Jewish people.

The singer subsequently confirmed that artificial intelligence was involved in creating the track, describing his approach as “AI for good.”

The Song Has Generated Strongly Divided Reactions

“We Will Dance Again” immediately produced sharply different responses.

Some supporters of Israel praised Boy George for publicly standing with Jewish communities and remembering victims of the October 7 attacks.

Other listeners strongly criticized the song, particularly its treatment of allegations concerning Israel’s conduct in Gaza.

The disagreement reflects the broader international debate surrounding the war.

United Nations investigators and human-rights organizations have made grave allegations regarding Israel’s conduct, while Israel has rejected genocide accusations and maintains that its military operations have targeted Hamas following the October 7 attacks.

Boy George has defended his position amid the criticism and has emphasized his concern about antisemitism and his support for Jewish friends.

The Controversy Now Centers on Accuracy

Whatever position someone holds regarding Israel and Gaza, the latest disagreement involving Boy George and Dua Lipa raises a separate question: whether public figures should attribute inflammatory statements to one another without reliable evidence.

Lipa’s support for Palestinian rights is well documented.

The specific statement Boy George attributed to her is not.

That difference matters, particularly when discussions surrounding Israel, Gaza, antisemitism and Palestinian rights are already intensely polarized.

Boy George remains entitled to defend his political views and explain the message behind “We Will Dance Again.” Lipa is similarly entitled to advocate for Palestinian rights.

But criticism should be based on what someone actually said.

Until credible evidence emerges showing otherwise, there is no reliable basis for claiming Dua Lipa said Israel “should be wiped off the face of the Earth.”
