Auditions are one of the most familiar parts of Hollywood. Actors read scenes, meet casting teams, test chemistry, and hope the room sees what they can do.

But not every famous role starts that way.

Sometimes a director already has one actor in mind. Sometimes a producer builds the project around a star. And sometimes a celebrity’s past work is enough to skip the traditional audition process completely.

Here are celebrities who landed major roles without going through the usual audition route.

Margot Robbie — Barbie

Margot Robbie did not go through a traditional audition process to play Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

That makes sense, because Robbie was not only the film’s star. She was also one of its producers through LuckyChap Entertainment.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus — Saturday Night Live

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was cast on Saturday Night Live without the kind of audition most comedians would expect.

Before joining the legendary sketch show, she was performing in Chicago with the Practical Theatre Company. Producers saw the group’s work and invited its members to join SNL in 1982.

Samuel L. Jackson — Nick Fury

Samuel L. Jackson’s road to Nick Fury was one of the strangest casting stories in the Marvel universe.

Before the MCU began, Marvel’s Ultimate comics redesigned Nick Fury using Jackson’s likeness. The actor later learned that the character looked like him, and instead of turning it into a legal fight, the situation helped open the door to him playing Fury on screen.

Ian McKellen — Gandalf
