Here is a closer look at stars who have built their names not only on screen, but for being genuinely difficult to work with.

Christian Bale

Leonardo DiCaprio

Early fame has a way of inflating egos, and by the industry’s own account, Leonardo DiCaprio was no exception. Director James Cameron recounted the now-famous story of DiCaprio’s Titanic audition during a career retrospective with GQ, revealing that the actor arrived thinking it was a casual meet and greet, not a screen test opposite Kate Winslet. When Cameron made clear he would need to actually read for the role, DiCaprio refused outright. Cameron extended a handshake and thanked him for coming in.

DiCaprio paused at the door and asked whether it was really that simple: no reading, no role? Cameron confirmed it without hesitation. He wasn’t about to risk two years of his life on instinct alone. An anonymous source speaking to Page Six alleged that Murray had behaved in physically inappropriate ways toward female cast and crew members in a manner that, while not criminal, left women feeling uncomfortable and disrespected. Murray addressed it himself during a televised conversation with CNBC’s Becky Quick, admitting that something he had intended as humor had landed badly and caused genuine hurt. The industry’s reaction was swift and punishing, and her career paid a serious price.

More than a decade later, when tens of thousands of below-the-line entertainment workers marched under the IATSE banner to protest those very same conditions, Heigl revisited the subject publicly. In an Instagram post, she stated plainly that dangerously long working days were never acceptable and that her position had never changed, regardless of what it had cost her.

In a 2021 interview with the Washington Post, Heigl challenged the “difficult” label directly: what does difficult actually mean? A woman with an opinion?
