Hotels are a normal part of celebrity life.

Stars stay in them while touring, filming, attending award shows, doing interviews, or traveling between public appearances. But in some tragic cases, hotels have also been the places where famous lives ended.

1. Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston was found dead at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on February 11, 2012.

Her death came one day before the Grammy Awards and just before Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party, which was also being held at the hotel. The Los Angeles County coroner later ruled her death an accidental drowning, with heart disease and cocaine use listed as contributing factors.

2. Liam Payne

Liam Payne died on October 16, 2024, after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The former One Direction member was 31. His death led to investigations in Argentina, and early charges were brought against several people connected to the case. Reuters later reported that an Argentine court cleared three of the accused in February 2025, while two others remained accused of supplying cocaine.

3. John Belushi

John Belushi was found dead at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles on March 5, 1982.

Anna Nicole Smith was found unresponsive at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, on February 8, 2007.

The model, actress, and reality TV personality was 39. Authorities later said she died from an accidental overdose and found no criminal element in her death.

5. Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain was found dead in a hotel room in France on June 8, 2018.

The chef, author, and travel host was filming an episode of CNN’s Parts Unknown at the time. French authorities said Bourdain died by suicide in a hotel in Kaysersberg, and early reporting said investigators had no indication that another person was involved.

6. Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin was found dead at the Landmark Motor Hotel in Hollywood on October 4, 1970.

The rock and blues singer was 27. PEOPLE reported that Joplin died from an accidental heroin overdose while working on what became her posthumous album Pearl.

7. Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix died in London on September 18, 1970, after being found unresponsive at the Samarkand Hotel.
