Leavitt Says Family Is Behind Her Decision

Behind Fallon’s jokes was a significant change inside the Trump administration.

Leavitt announced that she would leave her position after approximately a year and a half serving as Trump’s White House press secretary. She had recently returned to work following the birth of her second child.

In explaining her decision, Leavitt said balancing motherhood with one of the most demanding communications positions in American politics had become increasingly difficult. She said she did not believe she could give both her young children and the press secretary position the time and attention each required.

Her departure is expected at the end of August.

Trump Praised His Outgoing Press Secretary

According to reports on her departure, the president praised her work and indicated that she would remain connected to him as an outside adviser. Leavitt similarly made clear that leaving the White House does not represent a political break with Trump or the Republican movement she has represented from the briefing-room podium.

That distinction is important. Leavitt is leaving her official White House role, but her statement indicates that she intends to remain politically active.

Leavitt’s tenure was historic from the beginning.

She was appointed to the Trump administration in January 2025, with official White House records listing her as press secretary. At 27 when she took the job, she became the youngest White House press secretary in U.S. history.

Her regular briefings also made her one of the administration’s most recognizable public figures. She frequently defended Trump’s policies while engaging in combative exchanges with journalists and criticizing media coverage she considered unfair.

That high-profile approach inevitably made her both a popular figure among many Trump supporters and a frequent target of criticism from his opponents.

The Audience Reaction Became the Real Punchline

Political jokes are nothing unusual on The Tonight Show, but this particular segment stood out because Fallon temporarily lost control of his own monologue.
