K. Michelle Defends Morgan Wallen While Acknowledging His Past Use of a Racial Slur

K. Michelle is standing by her friendship with Morgan Wallen while making it clear that she does not support his past use of a racial slur.

The singer and Real Housewives of Atlanta alum addressed Wallen’s 2021 controversy during an appearance on The Breakfast Club on August 3, where she discussed her upcoming country music album, Jesus and Whiskey, and her long-standing admiration for the country superstar.

While acknowledging that Wallen was wrong to use the N-word, Michelle argued that the public conversation surrounding the incident has often overlooked broader issues within the entertainment industry.

Morgan Wallen Inspired Her Country Music Journey

During the interview, Michelle revealed that Wallen has been one of her favorite artists for years and credited one of his songs with influencing her own move into country music.

She said hearing Wallen’s “Talkin’ Tennessee” after relocating to Nashville had a profound impact on her as both a songwriter and performer.

According to Michelle, the song made her realize she wanted to pursue country music professionally, a genre she says has always been part of her identity growing up in Tennessee.

Addressing the 2021 Controversy

When host Charlamagne tha God brought up Wallen’s widely publicized 2021 use of the N-word, Michelle acknowledged the incident directly.

She emphasized that she was not defending the language itself and agreed that using the racial slur was wrong.

However, she also suggested there was additional context surrounding the incident, noting that Wallen was speaking with members of his circle at the time.

Michelle described Wallen as someone who has embraced Black culture and said her personal experiences with him have shaped her opinion.

“He is Black culture. He loves Black culture,” she said during the interview.

‘I’m Not Taking Up for Anybody’

Although Michelle spoke positively about Wallen personally, she repeatedly stressed that she was not excusing his actions.

“I’m not taking up for nobody saying the N-word,” she said.

Instead, she argued that the discussion should also examine inconsistencies in how similar controversies are treated across the entertainment industry.

Michelle said her comments were intended to highlight what she views as broader biases rather than minimize the impact of the racial slur.

She also acknowledged that the word remains deeply painful for many Black Americans regardless of the circumstances in which it is used.

Reflecting on Their Friendship

Michelle revealed that she and Wallen developed a friendship after she entered the Nashville music scene.

She also recalled attending one of his concerts, where she said she felt uncomfortable because of the way others treated her.

According to Michelle, Wallen later reached out to check on her following the experience, something she said reinforced her opinion of him on a personal level.

Morgan Wallen’s Public Apology

Wallen’s controversy began in January 2021 when a neighbor’s security camera captured him using the racial slur while returning home after a night out in Nashville.

After the video was published, Wallen issued multiple public apologies, describing his behavior as unacceptable and asking fans not to defend his actions.

“I fully accept any penalties I’m facing,” he said at the time.

Following the incident, Wallen faced significant professional consequences, including temporary suspension from several radio networks, removal from major streaming playlists and ineligibility for the 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards. Despite those setbacks, his music continued to perform strongly commercially, and he has since returned as one of country music’s biggest touring artists.

A New Chapter in Country Music

Michelle’s comments come as she prepares to release Jesus and Whiskey, her first full-length country album, on October 16.

Known primarily for her successful R&B career, the Nashville native has long spoken about her desire to record country music.

In a recent interview with People, she described the project as a natural evolution rather than a career change.

“Being a Tennessee girl, country is my first genre of choice,” she said. “It’s time to do what it is I do.”

As anticipation builds for the album, Michelle’s remarks about Wallen have sparked renewed discussion about accountability, redemption and the complexities of personal relationships within the music industry.
