Robert Irwin Calls Out Media for ‘Villainizing’ His Mom Terri Over Family Drama Claims

Robert Irwin has spent virtually his entire life in the public eye, but there is one part of celebrity attention that continues to frustrate him: seeing ordinary emotional moments turned into stories about supposed trouble within his family.

The 22-year-old wildlife conservationist recently reflected on that experience during an appearance on the Something to Talk About podcast. Irwin recalled being photographed looking visibly upset as a teenager, only to later see speculation suggesting his expression was connected to family tension. According to Robert, the real explanation was far simpler and more personal: his beloved pet chicken had just died.

Robert Was Grieving His Childhood Pet

Irwin said the incident happened when he was 16 and had just gotten off a flight.

Around that time, he learned that his family’s pet chicken, Piggy, had died at age 13. Robert explained that Piggy had been part of his life for years and meant considerably more to him than outsiders might have realized.

“She was so much more than a chicken,” he recalled.

Robert said cameras were waiting when he left the flight, capturing photographs of him while he was understandably emotional about the loss.

Instead of his sadness being connected to Piggy, however, Irwin recalled seeing reports attempting to interpret his appearance as evidence of supposed problems involving his mother, Terri Irwin, or sister Bindi Irwin.

Irwin Says His Mom Is Often ‘Villainized’

Robert was particularly frustrated by the way his mother became part of the speculation.

“They always villainize Mum for some reason,” he said during the podcast interview, before explaining that he had simply been devastated by losing his pet.

He urged people not to manufacture family conflict from photographs showing someone having a difficult moment.

For Robert, the experience illustrated one of the stranger realities of growing up famous: a photograph can capture a genuine emotion without capturing the reason behind it.

In this case, Robert says grief over a childhood pet became interpreted as something entirely different.

Robert Has Publicly Defended His Family Bond

Robert’s latest remarks are consistent with the way he has spoken about his family throughout his public career.

Rather than suggesting an ongoing divide with Terri, Robert has repeatedly praised his mother for raising him and Bindi following the death of their father, Steve Irwin.

Steve died in September 2006 after being injured by a stingray while filming off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Robert was only two years old at the time.

Terri subsequently raised Robert and Bindi while continuing the conservation work that she and Steve had built together.

Robert has frequently credited her with keeping both the family and Steve’s legacy together.

His ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Tribute Became Emotional

Robert made those feelings particularly clear during Season 34 of Dancing With the Stars.

During the show’s Dedication Night in October 2025, Robert and professional partner Witney Carson performed a contemporary routine to Phil Collins’ “You’ll Be in My Heart.” He dedicated the performance to Terri.

Before dancing, Robert spoke about how difficult it must have been for his mother to raise two children while coping with the loss of her husband.

He also credited Terri with ensuring that Steve remained an important presence in the children’s lives despite Robert being so young when his father died.

At the end of the performance, Terri joined her son on the ballroom floor for an emotional embrace.

Robert and Carson ultimately went on to win Season 34 and claim the Mirrorball Trophy.

The Irwins Have Continued Steve’s Conservation Legacy

Robert, Bindi and Terri have remained closely associated with Australia Zoo and the conservation mission established by the Irwin family.

Robert has developed his own career as a wildlife conservationist, photographer and television personality while continuing work connected to the zoo.

Bindi has similarly remained involved with conservation and Australia Zoo while raising her own family with husband Chandler Powell.

The siblings have also regularly celebrated their mother’s contribution to keeping the family’s work moving forward.

For Robert, that history makes stories portraying Terri negatively particularly frustrating.

Public Photographs Do Not Always Tell the Full Story

Robert’s story about Piggy also offers a reminder of how easily celebrity photographs can be interpreted without context.

A photograph can accurately show someone looking sad, angry or uncomfortable while revealing virtually nothing about why that person feels that way.

Robert said that in his case, photographers genuinely captured him during an emotional moment. What he objected to was the narrative subsequently attached to those images.

His explanation years later could hardly be further removed from dramatic celebrity-family speculation.

There was no secret argument behind his expression, according to Robert. He was a teenager who had just learned that a pet he loved had died.

And while Irwin accepts that public attention comes with his unusual life, turning moments like that into unsupported family drama remains one aspect of fame he finds difficult to accept.
