TikTok creator Sydney Towle, who inspired millions by openly documenting her battle with a rare form of bile duct cancer, has died at the age of 26.

Towle’s family announced her death on Thursday, Aug. 6, one day after she passed away, bringing to a close a nearly three-year fight against stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma. Throughout her illness, she built a supportive online community by sharing both the challenges and moments of hope that marked her journey.

Towle’s family confirmed her death in a heartfelt message shared across her social media accounts.

“We will always love you so much Sydney,” the caption read. “I am so proud of how hard you fought. I love you.”

The tribute accompanied a photograph of Towle standing on a mountaintop, alongside the words:

“Rest in Peace Sydney Towle. An endless ray of sunshine. A daughter, a sister and friend to so many.”

The announcement came just one day after her brother, Austin Towle, shared that she had entered hospice care surrounded by family and close friends.

A rare cancer diagnosis changed her life

Towle was diagnosed with stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma, a rare cancer that develops in the bile ducts, in 2023.

In an interview with Today in November 2024, she explained that her diagnosis began after doctors investigated what was initially believed to be a hernia.

“The doctor thought I had a hernia,” Towle recalled. “I’ll send you in for an ultrasound, just in case.”

The scan instead revealed a solid mass, leading to additional testing and her cancer diagnosis.

She documented every stage of her treatment

Rather than facing her illness privately, Towle chose to share her experience with more than one million followers on TikTok.

Over the following years, she documented surgeries, chemotherapy, clinical trials and the emotional realities of living with advanced cancer.

Even as her condition worsened, Towle continued updating supporters while exploring additional treatment options, including participation in a tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy clinical trial after seeking a second medical opinion.

Her honesty helped many viewers better understand the realities of living with a rare cancer diagnosis.
