Rosie O’Donnell Shares Her Vision for a Possible Return to Daytime Television

Rosie O’Donnell says she is actively exploring a return to daytime television, and if it happens, viewers can expect a format that feels familiar. Speaking on the Tangle podcast, the Emmy-winning comedian and television host revealed that her agents are currently meeting with potential partners to determine what her next project might look like.

Although O’Donnell is set to serve as a temporary guest host on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in August, she emphasized that she has no interest in permanently moving into late-night television. Instead, she believes daytime programming offers the right space for the kind of show she wants to create.

A return inspired by her original show

O’Donnell said any future program would closely resemble The Rosie O’Donnell Show, which aired from 1996 to 2002 and became one of the most successful daytime talk shows of its era.

She explained that audiences are looking for something different from today’s celebrity-focused programming. According to O’Donnell, nostalgia has become increasingly appealing, while traditional celebrity culture no longer holds the same influence it once did.

“I think America wants nostalgia,” she said, adding that she believes “celebrity culture is dead in America.”

Moving away from celebrity promotion

Rather than building a show around actors promoting new movies or musicians launching albums, O’Donnell said she would focus on conversations that feel more genuine and entertaining.

She suggested featuring human-interest stories, uplifting news, Broadway performances, games and everyday people alongside occasional celebrity guests. If famous guests did appear, she said it would be because they wanted to have an enjoyable conversation rather than simply promote a project.

O’Donnell also noted that today’s audiences can interact directly with celebrities through social media, making traditional promotional interviews less essential than they once were.

A different vision for daytime television

The longtime television personality expressed disappointment with the current daytime landscape, arguing that many programs feature similar interviews and repeated promotional talking points.

She said she would prefer creating an environment centered on fun, optimism and meaningful conversations. Her goal, she explained, would be to give viewers an hour that offers relief from everyday stress while highlighting positive stories.

O’Donnell described the concept as an opportunity to “bring back hope” and create “an hour of peaceful joy.”

Streaming could be the future

While syndicated daytime television once dominated American broadcasting, O’Donnell acknowledged that the industry has changed significantly.

Because of those changes, she said she would be open to launching a new daytime show through a streaming platform instead of pursuing a traditional syndicated television format.

She confirmed that her representatives are currently evaluating different opportunities to determine which platform would best suit the project.

Timing matters

O’Donnell also discussed when she would ideally like the new show to begin. She explained that she envisions launching the program after President Donald Trump’s current term in office, saying she believes that period would provide an opportunity for healing and renewed optimism.

The actress has been an outspoken critic of Trump for many years, with their public disagreements dating back nearly two decades. Earlier this year, she relocated to Ireland, where she now lives with her youngest child.

Clarifying the Jimmy Kimmel rumors

Speculation recently circulated suggesting O’Donnell might permanently replace Jimmy Kimmel after serving as a guest host on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. She quickly dismissed those reports through a post on Instagram.

O’Donnell explained that after completing her guest-hosting duties, she planned to return to Ireland, where her child will begin eighth grade. She reiterated that late-night television is not the direction she wants to pursue, while acknowledging that daytime television remains an exciting possibility.

Whether her next project ultimately lands on a streaming platform or another outlet, O’Donnell appears determined to recreate the warmth, humor and audience connection that made her original daytime program one of television’s defining talk shows.
