Andrew Garfield Reveals the One Condition for Returning as Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield isn’t ruling out another return as Spider-Man but he says it would take a truly unexpected idea to convince him to wear the suit again.

The actor, who portrayed Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man films before making a fan-favorite return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, recently shared what kind of project could bring him back to the Marvel universe.

Rather than another traditional superhero blockbuster, Garfield says he’d only return if the story pushed the character into completely new territory.

‘It Would Need to Be Very Strange’

Speaking with The Playlist, Garfield explained that any future Spider-Man appearance would have to surprise both him and audiences.

“I would need it to be very, very odd,” he said.

“I would need it to be very strange, and I would need it to be completely unconventional… I would want it to be just completely unexpected, like a genre of Spider-Man that you’ve never seen before.”

For Garfield, simply revisiting familiar territory isn’t enough.

Instead, he’s interested in a story that feels creatively bold and unlike any Spider-Man film that’s come before.

A Spider-Man Road Trip?

Although Garfield admitted he doesn’t have a fully developed concept in mind, he did offer one playful suggestion.

“Maybe like a road trip movie,” he said.

While the comment appeared to be made in jest, it reflects his desire to explore the character in ways audiences wouldn’t normally expect.

Marvel Studios has increasingly experimented with genre storytelling in recent years, blending superhero films with elements of horror, comedy, political thrillers and multiverse adventures.

Garfield’s idea suggests he’d prefer a similarly unconventional approach if he ever returned.

From Spider-Man to Fan Favorite

Garfield first played Peter Parker in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, followed by The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014.

Although Sony’s planned sequel series was ultimately canceled, many fans continued campaigning for Garfield’s return.

That wish became reality in 2021 when Garfield and Tobey Maguire joined Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home, bringing together three generations of Spider-Men in one of Marvel’s biggest box-office successes.

Garfield’s emotional performance earned widespread praise, with many viewers calling for him to receive another standalone Spider-Man project.

Responding to Fan Theories

Before the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, speculation once again spread online that Garfield might secretly appear in the film.

Because he successfully concealed his role in No Way Home until the movie’s release, many fans were skeptical when he denied returning.

When asked about theories claiming Marvel had digitally removed characters from promotional footage, Garfield dismissed the speculation with humor.

“This is absolutely ludicrous,” he said, joking that fans had entered “conspiracy theory-level attempts at investigative journalism.”

His comments ultimately proved accurate, as Brand New Day arrived without another appearance from Garfield’s Spider-Man.

Spider-Man’s Box Office Success Continues

Even without Garfield’s return, Spider-Man: Brand New Day became one of Marvel’s biggest commercial successes.

The film reportedly earned approximately $360 million during its domestic opening weekend, surpassing the previous North American opening weekend record held by Avengers: Endgame.

Worldwide, the movie opened to an estimated $932 million, continuing Spider-Man’s status as one of cinema’s most valuable franchises.

Could Garfield Return Again?

While Garfield has repeatedly said he has no current plans to reprise the role, his latest comments leave the door open.

Rather than closing the chapter on Peter Parker completely, he appears interested in returning if filmmakers can present a concept that genuinely surprises him.

For now, fans hoping to see Garfield swing back into action may have to wait—but if the right story comes along, the actor has made it clear he isn’t saying never.
