Bill Maher Says Ben Affleck Still Won’t Return to His Show 12 Years After Their Viral Clash

Michael Michael, August 22, 2026August 22, 2026

More than a decade after Ben Affleck and Bill Maher engaged in one of the most memorable debates in Real Time history, Maher says the actor still has not returned to the program.

Speaking on his Club Random podcast, Maher revisited the heated October 2014 exchange involving Affleck, author Sam Harris and a discussion about Islam. According to Maher, he has continued inviting the Oscar-winning actor back to Real Time With Bill Maher, but Affleck has repeatedly declined. Despite their disagreement, Maher emphasized that he still likes Affleck and believes there could be room for reconciliation.

Maher discussed the long-running situation during a conversation with comedian Max Amini on Club Random.

According to Maher, Affleck hasn’t appeared on Real Time since their contentious 2014 encounter, despite Maher’s efforts to bring him back.

“I invite him every year,” Maher said while discussing the actor.

Maher suggested that enough time has passed for the two men to potentially have a different conversation about what happened. He also made clear that his disagreement with Affleck’s position hadn’t translated into personal hostility.

“I love him,” Maher said, before acknowledging that the two simply disagreed on the issue.

What Happened During the 2014 Real Time Debate

The original confrontation occurred during the October 3, 2014, episode of HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher.

Affleck joined a panel that also included Sam Harris, journalist Nicholas Kristof and former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele.

The conversation became heated when Harris argued that liberals were reluctant to criticize certain beliefs and practices associated with Islam. Maher supported parts of Harris’ argument, while Affleck strongly objected to what he considered overly broad characterizations of Muslims.

The discussion rapidly became one of the most intense exchanges the program had produced.

Affleck called parts of the argument “gross” and “racist” and challenged the idea of applying the behavior or beliefs of extremists to the wider Muslim population.

One reason the segment attracted so much attention was Affleck’s visibly passionate response.

The actor argued that criticism of extremist groups shouldn’t become a sweeping judgment of approximately a billion Muslims around the world. He compared such generalizations to using antisemitic stereotypes about Jewish people.

Maher and Harris maintained that they were criticizing specific ideas and doctrines rather than people based on race or ethnicity.

Nicholas Kristof also pushed back against broad generalizations during the discussion, pointing to Muslims who were actively advocating for human rights and opposing extremism.

The resulting argument became less a conventional celebrity interview and more an intense debate about religion, tolerance and the boundaries of criticism.

Maher Admits the Conversation Became Emotional

Looking back more than a decade later, Maher acknowledged that the intensity helped turn the segment into a viral cultural moment.

He said the argument became “emotional,” something he believes explains why viewers remembered it so vividly.

“More people mentioned that episode to me than anything,” Maher recalled.

He also suggested that the appearance of a major Hollywood star in such a heated ideological discussion contributed to the enormous attention.

“It wasn’t the best episode we ever had, but it got emotional with a movie star,” Maher said.

The clip continued circulating online long after the original broadcast, periodically resurfacing whenever debates about religion and free speech returned to the news.

Sam Harris and Affleck Later Put Their Disagreement Behind Them

There is one notable difference between Affleck’s relationships with the two men involved in the original argument.

Harris has previously said that he and Affleck eventually communicated privately and resolved their personal disagreement.

Maher, however, says he hasn’t had a comparable opportunity to clear the air with Affleck.

The comedian suggested that a private conversation today could potentially reveal more common ground than their television confrontation suggested.

“If I talked to him privately or it’s been 12 years, maybe I think there’s a middle ground,” Maher said.

Affleck has not publicly responded to Maher’s latest remarks.

Despite Affleck’s apparent reluctance to return, Maher’s latest comments were notably conciliatory.

He didn’t suggest that Affleck should abandon his position from 2014. Instead, Maher acknowledged that disagreement between them could remain even if their personal relationship improved.

That distinction matters because the original discussion became so heated that it could easily have created the impression of lasting personal animosity.

Maher’s comments suggest that, at least from his perspective, that isn’t the case.

He remains willing to welcome Affleck back and appears interested in seeing what a conversation between them would look like after more than a decade.

The Conversation Eventually Turned to Jennifer Lopez

Maher and Amini also brought some humor into their discussion of Affleck.

Amini joked about the concept of a fixed-term marriage in some interpretations of Islamic law, connecting the topic back to Affleck’s highly publicized relationships.

Maher responded by joking about Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, whose marriage ended in divorce.

Affleck was previously married to Jennifer Garner, with whom he shares three children. He later rekindled his romance with Lopez, married her in 2022 and finalized their divorce in 2025.

The jokes shifted Maher’s discussion away from the seriousness of the original confrontation and toward the looser tone typical of Club Random.

Whether Affleck will ever accept another invitation remains uncertain.

His representatives had not publicly responded to Maher’s latest remarks in the original report, and Affleck himself has not indicated that he intends to revisit their debate.

Maher, however, appears to be leaving the door open.

Twelve years after an argument that became one of Real Time’s most widely discussed moments, he says he continues to invite Affleck back and believes the two might find some common ground if they finally spoke privately.

For now, however, one of late-night television’s longest-running celebrity disagreements remains unresolved.
