Emmy Rossum reveals the valuable lesson Sean Penn taught her on the Mystic River set

Emmy Rossum says one of the most important lessons of her acting career came not from a classroom, but from watching Sean Penn work on the set of Mystic River.

The actress, who was just 16 years old when she appeared in Clint Eastwood’s acclaimed 2003 drama, recently reflected on the experience, revealing how Penn’s confidence in his creative process permanently changed the way she approaches every role.

Before becoming widely known for starring in The Phantom of the Opera and later Shameless, Rossum landed a significant early role in Mystic River.

Directed by Clint Eastwood, the Oscar-winning crime drama featured an acclaimed cast that included Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Laurence Fishburne, Laura Linney and Marcia Gay Harden.

Rossum portrayed Katie Markum, the teenage daughter of Penn’s character, in a performance that helped introduce her to a wider audience.

Speaking to Playboy, Rossum explained that Penn’s greatest lesson wasn’t delivered through formal advice but through his behavior on set.

She said she admired how comfortable he was allowing cast and crew to witness his creative process without worrying about appearing vulnerable or imperfect.

Coming from years of performing with the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus, Rossum had been trained to deliver polished performances immediately.

Watching Penn work showed her that acting could also involve experimentation and discovery throughout the filming process.

She described that realization as “really profound” because it influenced how she approached every production afterward.

Advice that stayed with her

Rossum also recalled one piece of direct advice Penn shared early in her career: choose projects that are fun.

For Rossum, however, “fun” doesn’t necessarily mean lighthearted roles.

Instead, she said she’s drawn to characters with emotional complexity roles that challenge her to uncover multiple layers rather than simply playing someone straightforward.

That philosophy has guided many of her career choices over the past two decades.

Rossum currently stars in Hulu’s crime series Furious, playing FBI agent Alice Black.

She described Alice as a deeply complicated character whose personal experiences have shaped an unusually difficult relationship with intimacy and trust.

Rossum explained that some scenes required extensive rehearsal with stunt coordinators to safely perform physically demanding sequences while exploring the emotional complexity of the character.

She praised series creator Elizabeth Meriwether for encouraging actors to embrace difficult material rather than shy away from it.

Staying connected with her Shameless family

Away from work, Rossum says she remains close with many of her former Shameless castmates.

Now a mother of two, she revealed that the group still plans regular get-togethers, including game nights and boating trips together.

For Rossum, maintaining those friendships has become one of the lasting rewards of the long-running series that helped define her career.

Looking back, however, she credits one of her earliest Hollywood experiences and Sean Penn’s fearless example as a defining moment that continues to shape her work today.
