Michael Michael, August 19, 2026August 19, 2026

K-pop influencer Mina Chan has died at the age of 26 following a distressing TikTok livestream, according to media reports from South Korea. The Japanese social media personality had developed a sizable online following through her enthusiasm for K-pop, particularly the group ENHYPEN.

Chan reportedly had more than 80,000 followers on TikTok and was living in South Korea. News of her death prompted an outpouring of condolences online, while also renewing conversations about cyberbullying, boundaries within fandoms and the pressures faced by highly visible social media personalities.

Police Responded After Receiving a Report

According to reporting attributed to The Korea Herald, authorities were alerted during the early hours of August 5 after concerns were raised about Chan’s welfare.

The Yongsan Police Station reportedly said officers responded to her residence and found her dead at approximately 5:33 a.m.

Media reports have described her death as an apparent suicide. In the absence of a final publicly reported determination from authorities, however, details surrounding the circumstances should be treated cautiously.

Social media users reportedly became concerned about Chan during a TikTok livestream and attempted to alert others to the situation.

Chan’s Sister Reportedly Confirmed Her Death

Chan’s younger sister subsequently confirmed the loss through a message shared on Instagram, according to published reports.

“My beloved older sister, who was always kind and warm to everyone she met, has passed away,” the statement read.

She also asked people to keep Chan in their thoughts and prayers.

The message was followed by condolences from followers who had known Chan through her social media presence.

Mina Chan Was Known as an ENHYPEN Fan

Chan had become particularly recognizable within online communities surrounding ENHYPEN, the South Korean boy band formed through the survival competition series I-LAND.

She frequently attended events connected with the group and shared her enthusiasm for its members with followers.

Shortly before her death, however, Chan became the subject of criticism within parts of the fandom following an interaction at an ENHYPEN event in the United States.

The disagreement centered on Chan attempting to have member Sunoo give flowers to fellow member Ni-ki.

Some social media users criticized the interaction and argued that she had crossed appropriate fan boundaries.

She Publicly Apologized Following the Controversy

Chan addressed the criticism in a lengthy statement posted on X on July 31.

She apologized to Sunoo and his fans and acknowledged that attending multiple fan-signing events had affected her perception of her relationship with the performers.

“By attending ENHYPEN’s fansigns multiple times, I had deluded myself into thinking I was closer to the members than I actually was,” she wrote.

Chan also expressed regret about her actions during the event in America and apologized for prioritizing her desire to interact with Ni-ki.

Despite the apology, reports indicate that criticism of Chan continued online.

Followers Condemn Online Harassment

Following news of Chan’s death, comments on her social media accounts shifted toward remembrance, condolences and criticism of hostile behavior within online fandoms.

Some followers argued that disagreements about fan etiquette should never result in sustained personal attacks or harassment.

It is important, however, not to establish a direct causal relationship between online criticism and Chan’s death without evidence from investigators or her family. Suicide is complex and can involve multiple contributing circumstances that may not be publicly known.

The tragedy nevertheless highlights how quickly criticism can escalate on social platforms, particularly when thousands of people become involved in disputes surrounding celebrities and fandom communities.

Her Death Prompts an Outpouring of Condolences

Chan’s final social media posts have since become places where followers are sharing memories and messages of sympathy.

For many who followed her, Chan was someone whose enthusiasm for music and K-pop helped connect her with people around the world.

Her death at only 26 has left followers grieving while raising difficult questions about how people communicate with one another online.

Whatever disagreements existed before her death, Chan’s story is also a reminder that there is a real person behind every social media account. Criticism can be expressed without harassment, humiliation or personal attacks.

As her family mourns, their request is simple: remember the woman they described as kind and warm, and keep her in people’s thoughts.
