Miss Universe Cuba Contestant Eneisy Rodríguez Speaks Out After Cruel Comments About Her Age and Body

Eneisy Rodríguez entered Miss Universe Cuba 2026 hoping to make history as the first contestant to represent Hialeah. Instead, the 33-year-old teacher, actress and dancer found herself dealing with an unexpected wave of criticism directed at her age, body and appearance as the competition approached its August 20 finale.

Rather than remaining silent, Rodríguez publicly addressed the comments and turned the experience into a message about empathy, confidence and the consequences of attacking strangers online. Her response also drew support from fellow contestants, including the woman who ultimately walked away with the Miss Universe Cuba crown.

Eneisy Rodríguez Says the Criticism Became Impossible to Ignore

Rodríguez revealed that negative comments had followed her throughout her pageant journey, but said they became noticeably more intense shortly before the final.

“Over the last several days, I have received a level of bullying that I never expected to experience,” she wrote in a social media statement, according to HOLA! USA. Rodríguez explained that criticism had been present since the beginning of her campaign but had recently grown much louder.

Some commenters reportedly questioned whether Rodríguez deserved to compete, while others focused specifically on her weight, age and physical appearance. Separate coverage of the controversy similarly reported that she faced criticism for failing to match some people’s idea of what a traditional beauty-pageant contestant should look like.

She Admitted the Body Shaming Was Painful

Rodríguez did not pretend that the attacks had no effect on her.

She said reading claims that she did not belong in the competition and seeing strangers criticize her appearance had been painful. But instead of responding with similar hostility, she reminded followers that there is a real person behind every social-media account and that people cannot know what someone else may be experiencing privately.

Rodríguez said she chose to address the situation because she wanted to remain true to herself rather than because she wanted to give additional attention to her critics.

Her response quickly transformed what could have remained a pageant controversy into a broader discussion about how women are judged online.

Her Career as a Teacher Shaped Her Response

Rodríguez’s message carried particular significance because of her work away from the pageant stage.

She currently teaches film and media to high school students and previously worked as an elementary school teacher. Her professional experience has also included journalism, sports media and coaching girls’ basketball.

Rodríguez explained that empathy and kindness are principles she regularly discusses with her students. Speaking publicly about the attacks therefore became a way of practicing the same values she encourages young people to follow.

She also offered a larger message to women, arguing that they deserve to feel comfortable with themselves, occupy space confidently and pursue their ambitions without fearing attacks simply for being who they are.

Her Age Became Part of the Pageant Conversation

At 33, Rodríguez also challenged an image traditionally associated with major beauty competitions, where contestants historically tended to be younger.

Her participation comes after an important change at the international level. Miss Universe eliminated its upper age restriction beginning with the 2024 competition, opening eligibility to adult women over 28 who previously would have been unable to participate under the old rules.

For Rodríguez, however, age was only one part of the criticism. Reports indicated that commenters also focused heavily on her body and whether her appearance fit their expectations of a pageant contestant.

Her decision to compete nevertheless demonstrated how changing pageant rules are creating opportunities for women who might previously have been excluded before ever reaching the stage.

Other Miss Universe Cuba Contestants Defended Her

Rodríguez was not left to confront the criticism alone.

Mia Dio, who represented Isla de la Juventud, publicly supported her fellow contestant, telling Rodríguez that she was beautiful and belonged in the competition. Daniela Reyes, representing Pinar del Río, also praised Rodríguez for transforming a difficult situation into a positive message centered on love and authenticity.

That support became especially noteworthy after the final.

Dio was crowned Miss Universe Cuba 2026 on August 20 at the Dennis C. Moss Cultural Arts Center in Cutler Bay, Florida. She received the crown from Miss Universe Cuba 2025 Lina Luaces and earned the opportunity to represent Cuba at the international Miss Universe competition.

Rodríguez Still Made Her Mark on the Competition

Although Rodríguez did not win the crown, she advanced to the Top 18 after a selection process that began with more than 100 applicants in April. Nineteen contestants ultimately entered the final stage of the Miss Universe Cuba competition.

Simply appearing in the competition also carried symbolic importance. Rodríguez became the first contestant to wear a Hialeah sash at Miss Universe Cuba, although Hialeah’s inclusion itself generated online debate because the Florida city is not geographically part of Cuba. It does, however, have a famously large Cuban and Cuban American community.

For Rodríguez, the experience ultimately became about something larger than advancing through a beauty competition.
