Stephen Colbert Surprises Fans With a New Look While Celebrating Two Major TCA Wins

Stephen Colbert has returned to the spotlight with both a new look and two major honors. The former Late Show host appeared remotely during the 2026 Television Critics Association Awards sporting a gray goatee, a noticeable departure from the clean-shaven appearance viewers became accustomed to during his years behind the CBS desk.

But Colbert’s facial hair was hardly the biggest development. The Television Critics Association honored The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for its final season while also presenting Colbert with its Career Achievement Award, giving the comedian a significant double victory only months after his long-running late-night program came to an end.

Colbert Debuted a Gray Goatee

Because the 2026 TCA Awards were presented remotely, Colbert accepted his honors through a prerecorded video rather than appearing at a traditional ceremony.

The appearance immediately drew attention because Colbert had grown a gray goatee since leaving his nightly television job. LateNighter jokingly dubbed the new facial hair the “Colbeard,” while TV Insider noted the striking change from the comedian’s typically clean-shaven Late Show image.

Colbert seemed relaxed during the appearance, which represented one of his most notable public moments since the series finale aired in May.

His comments, however, remained focused primarily on the people who had worked alongside him rather than his post-Late Show appearance.

The Late Show Won for Its Final Season

The TCA awarded The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Outstanding Achievement in Variety, Talk or Sketch.

The CBS program defeated a competitive field that included The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Saturday Night Live and The Muppet Show.

The victory was particularly meaningful because it recognized the final season of a program that had been a fixture of American late-night television for more than a decade.

Colbert began hosting The Late Show in September 2015 after succeeding David Letterman. His version of the CBS franchise ultimately ran for nearly 11 years before airing its final episode in May 2026.

He Praised His Staff for Finishing Strong

Colbert used his acceptance message to recognize the people who kept producing the show even after they knew their time together was coming to an end.

He said he “couldn’t have been prouder” of the Late Show staff and marveled at how focused they remained during the final stretch. Colbert also acknowledged the unusual emotional circumstances surrounding those episodes, describing the team as knowing they were heading toward an unavoidable ending.

Despite that knowledge, he emphasized the joy the staff continued to find in making the show.

The remarks transformed what could have been a straightforward awards acceptance into another farewell to the writers, producers, performers and crew members who had helped define his late-night career.

Colbert Also Received the Career Achievement Award

His second TCA honor belonged to Colbert personally.

The Television Critics Association selected him as the recipient of its 2026 Career Achievement Award, recognizing a television career that extends far beyond The Late Show.

Before taking over CBS late night, Colbert became a breakout figure on The Daily Show and then created the satirical conservative pundit persona at the center of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. That program ran from 2005 through 2014 and established him as one of television’s most distinctive political satirists.

His TCA career honor places him in especially notable company among late-night personalities. Previous recipients include Johnny Carson and David Letterman.

The Final Late Show Season Is Also an Emmy Contender

The TCA victories arrive as Colbert’s former program prepares for another major awards test.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is nominated for Outstanding Variety Series at the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards. The Television Academy’s official records list Colbert among the nominated executive producers for the series.

The show received nine Emmy nominations for its final year, its highest total for a single season.

That recognition has given the program an unusual awards-season afterlife. Even though new episodes have ended, the work completed during its farewell season continues to compete against some of television’s biggest variety programs.

Some Former Late Show Writers Already Have a New Gig

Members of Colbert’s former writing operation are also keeping busy.

Several Late Show writers have joined the creative team for the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be hosted by Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay on September 14.

The former Colbert writers are helping develop material for Hargitay’s hosting duties, providing them with a high-profile project only months after The Late Show ended.

Their involvement is especially fitting considering their former show will itself be competing during the ceremony.

The 2026 TCA Awards Celebrated Much More Than Colbert

Colbert was one of several major winners announced at the 42nd annual TCA Awards.

Heated Rivalry captured the prestigious Program of the Year prize, while Widow’s Bay collected three awards, more than any other program. Its victories included Outstanding Achievement in Comedy and Outstanding New Program, while Kate O’Flynn earned Individual Achievement in Comedy.

The Pitt repeated as the winner for Outstanding Achievement in Drama, and Rhea Seehorn received Individual Achievement in Drama for Pluribus. The sketch-comedy classic In Living Color received the Heritage Award.

Even among that crowded group, Colbert’s two honors provided one of the ceremony’s most sentimental stories.

Colbert’s Late Night Chapter May Be Over, but His Television Legacy Isn’t

Colbert ended his acceptance message with a brief acknowledgment of the medium that dominated so much of his professional life, saying he missed television and had plenty of good memories from it.

For now, his new gray goatee offers a visual reminder that the nightly Late Show routine is behind him. The two TCA Awards, however, demonstrate that his influence on television remains very much part of the conversation.

After decades spanning The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and The Late Show, Colbert’s career is entering a different phase. Whatever comes next, the TCA’s Career Achievement Award and one final victory for The Late Show gave him another opportunity to celebrate the people and television work that brought him there.
