Although no casting announcement has been made, Navarrette recently revealed that she met with Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier and shared which iconic mutant she would love to portray if given the chance. Navarrette has emerged as one of Hollywood’s rising talents following her acclaimed performance in Obsession, one of the year’s biggest films.

The role has significantly raised her profile, leading to awards buzz, industry attention and meetings with several prominent filmmakers as she considers the next stage of her career.

Speaking on Variety’s Up Next podcast, Navarrette explained that the success of Obsession has created opportunities to meet directors and discuss future projects.

“I’ve been taking a lot of meetings since Obsession came out,” she said. “That’s been really nice because you get to meet people and ask questions.”

Among those meetings was one with director Jake Schreier, who is set to helm Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men movie after directing Thunderbolts.

Navarrette praised Schreier’s work on the Marvel film, saying she appreciated its focus on character development.

“I thought what Jake brought to Thunderbolts was what I used to love about Marvel,” she said. “It was character-driven.”

She added that she spent much of their conversation expressing her admiration for his approach to storytelling.

Although Navarrette stressed that meeting Schreier should not be interpreted as confirmation of any casting discussions, she didn’t hesitate when asked which X-Men character she’d most like to play.

“Mystique has always been super cool,” she said.

The shape-shifting mutant has previously been portrayed by Rebecca Romijn in the original X-Men film series and later by Jennifer Lawrence in the franchise’s prequel films.

Marvel Studios has not announced who will play Mystique in its upcoming reboot.

Beyond discussing superhero ambitions, Navarrette has also spoken openly about her family heritage.

The actress has an Australian mother and a Mexican father, and she says both cultures have shaped her personal identity and creative interests.

In a previous interview with Cosmopolitan, Navarrette reflected on growing up surrounded by horror films, recalling that watching scary movies with relatives became an important family tradition despite frightening her as a child.

She explained that horror has always felt culturally meaningful to her and remains a genre she continues to appreciate.
