Rosario Dawson Jokes About Being Rejected by Spider Man After Her Marvel Cameo Was Cut

Rosario Dawson has revealed that she was supposed to make a surprise return to the Marvel universe in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, only for her scene to disappear from the finished movie. Rather than hide her disappointment, the actress has been able to laugh about the experience, including her mother’s memorable reaction to the news.

The 47-year-old actress had filmed a cameo as Claire Temple, the character she first played in Marvel’s Netflix-era television shows. Dawson discussed the deleted appearance during a GalaxyCon event in Raleigh, North Carolina, joking that she had effectively become a “reject of Spider-Man.”

Dawson Had Already Filmed Her Marvel Return

Dawson’s appearance was more than an idea that never reached production. She confirmed that she actually filmed the scene before learning that it would not appear in the theatrical version.

The news was particularly disappointing because Dawson had already been preparing to celebrate the cameo publicly. She explained that she had behind-the-scenes material ready to share, including content featuring her grandson dressed in Spider-Man gear. Then came the message informing her that the scene had been removed.

Dawson handled the situation with humor, telling the audience that her mother’s immediate concern was that she would no longer be able to share the behind-the-scenes pictures.

Her Mother Had a Hilarious Reaction

According to Dawson, she told her mother that her part had been cut, prompting a reaction focused less on the lost cameo and more on the photos they had planned to post.

Dawson joked about the contrast between being removed from a major Spider-Man movie and her mother worrying about unused pictures. She also revealed that she had prepared her own social-media post before receiving the disappointing email.

Despite making light of the experience, Dawson clearly had a personal reason to be excited about joining a Spider-Man movie. She has spoken about her family connection to the superhero through an uncle who worked as a comic-book artist and drew Spider-Man.

What Rosario Dawson’s Deleted Scene Would Have Shown

More details have since emerged about where Claire Temple would have appeared in the story.

Reports indicate that the sequence came after Peter Parker’s confrontation with Mac Gargan, better known as Scorpion. An injured Peter would have gone to a hospital, where he encountered Dawson’s Claire Temple. The sequence would therefore have created another direct connection between the Spider-Man side of Marvel and characters associated with Daredevil.

Screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers indicated that the decision was not about the quality of Dawson’s performance. Sommers said the scene was good but suggested it was ultimately sacrificed for time as the filmmakers shaped the finished movie.

Claire Temple Has a Long Marvel History

Dawson first appeared as Claire Temple in Daredevil in 2015. She subsequently became one of the connecting figures across Marvel’s Netflix television universe, appearing in Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders.

That history made her planned Spider-Man cameo especially notable. Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock had already crossed into Peter Parker’s story with an appearance in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, making Claire’s return another potential bridge between the characters.

For longtime Marvel viewers, seeing Dawson back as Claire would also have marked a return to a character she has not regularly played in recent years.

Dawson Still Wants Another Chance to Play Claire

Being cut from the movie has not diminished Dawson’s enthusiasm for the role.

The actress said she loves knowing that Claire remains part of the same wider universe populated by these Marvel characters, and she expressed hope that another project could eventually give her the opportunity to play the character again.

With Marvel increasingly bringing characters from its earlier television productions into its newer projects, a future Claire Temple appearance is certainly conceivable, although no return has been officially announced.

Spider Man Brand New Day Marks Holland’s Fourth Solo Film

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened theatrically on July 31, 2026. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by McKenna and Sommers, the film runs approximately two hours and 25 minutes.

Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker, while Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are also back. The cast includes Jon Bernthal, Michael Mando, Mark Ruffalo and Sadie Sink.

For Dawson, however, the story of Brand New Day will always include the Marvel comeback audiences never got to see. Her playful reaction suggests she is taking the disappointment in stride while leaving the door open for Claire Temple to return another day.
