Roseanne Star Michael Fishman Breaks Silence on Show’s Cancellation and Defends ABC’s Decision

Michael Fishman is speaking out about the controversy that ended the Roseanne revival, making clear that he does not believe the sitcom was unfairly canceled after Roseanne Barr’s widely condemned social media post in 2018.

Fishman, who played D.J. Conner on the original sitcom and later appeared on The Conners, addressed the subject after receiving a social media comment arguing that Barr had been unfairly punished for an edgy joke. Fishman strongly rejected that interpretation, saying freedom of speech does not eliminate responsibility for what someone says.

Fishman said he has regularly received messages about the controversy since Roseanne was canceled.

“I get these kinds of ignorant and inaccurate comments daily,” he said in a video response, according to People. Fishman explained that he had generally avoided responding to such remarks for years but decided the latest comment warranted an answer.

The actor argued that political debates surrounding the cancellation have sometimes obscured what actually happened. In his view, attempts to characterize Barr’s post as simply another provocative joke misrepresent the controversy that prompted ABC to act.

What Led ABC to Cancel Roseanne

The Roseanne revival arrived in 2018, more than two decades after the original sitcom ended its initial run in 1997. Its return generated major attention and strong ratings.

The situation changed after Barr posted a since-deleted tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former senior adviser to President Barack Obama. Barr compared Jarrett to an ape, prompting widespread condemnation and accusations of racism.

Barr subsequently apologized. She also said she did not know Jarrett was Black and referenced having taken Ambien before posting the message.

ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey announced the cancellation, calling Barr’s statement “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.”

Fishman rejected the argument that Barr was simply behaving like an edgy comedian.

“The brilliant comedians help us laugh at the darkest, darkest topics,” Fishman said. “Sadly, in this case, there was no joke.”

He added that, in his opinion, “the show was rightfully canceled.”

Fishman emphasized that performers have freedom of expression, but he believes that freedom comes with accountability. “That doesn’t mean there’s no responsibility and no consequences,” he said.

His remarks are significant because Fishman had such a long personal and professional relationship with Barr.

Fishman Still Expresses Love for Roseanne Barr

Despite condemning the post, Fishman stopped short of rejecting Barr personally.

“Good people make mistakes,” he said, adding that he still has love and compassion for the person responsible for the comments.

That distinction formed an important part of Fishman’s response. He made clear that criticizing Barr’s actions does not require him to erase the personal relationship they developed during their years working together.

Fishman first joined Roseanne as a child actor and portrayed D.J. Conner during the sitcom’s original run. He returned when the series was revived in 2018.

The Conners Continued Without Barr

Although Roseanne was canceled, the Conner family did not disappear from television.

ABC developed The Conners, bringing back John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert and other members of the ensemble while moving forward without Barr.

Within the spinoff’s storyline, Roseanne Conner was revealed to have died from an opioid overdose.

Fishman also returned as D.J. Conner and appeared during the first four seasons of the spinoff. The Conners ultimately enjoyed a substantial run of its own, airing for seven seasons between 2018 and 2025.

Fishman Warns That Words Carry Consequences

Fishman used his response to make a broader argument about online behavior and personal responsibility.

“Words have real world consequences,” he said while urging people to reconsider posting racist or hateful statements online.

The actor argued that dehumanizing language should not automatically be defended as comedy simply because the person responsible is a comedian or public figure.

His position is ultimately straightforward: people are entitled to express themselves, but employers, audiences and others are also entitled to react to those statements.

A Controversy That Still Follows the Roseanne Cast

Eight years after the cancellation, the circumstances surrounding Roseanne clearly remain a subject of debate among viewers.

Fishman’s latest comments show that the controversy continues to reach members of the cast long after The Conners established an independent identity and eventually concluded its run.

While Fishman continues to express affection for Barr personally, he is leaving little ambiguity about his view of ABC’s 2018 decision. He believes the tweet crossed a line and rejects claims that the revival was canceled simply because audiences had become less accepting of provocative comedy.

For Fishman, the larger lesson is about accountability: freedom of expression allows people to speak, but it does not guarantee freedom from the consequences that may follow.
