Rosie O’Donnell Takes Aim at Donald Trump With a Scathing Song Urging Him to Resign

Rosie O’Donnell ended her four-night guest-hosting run on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with a musical message aimed directly at President Donald Trump, adding another chapter to one of the entertainment world’s longest-running celebrity-political feuds.

During Thursday’s show, O’Donnell performed a parody set to the melody of the traditional Irish ballad “Danny Boy.” The comedian used the number to mock Trump on everything from his appearance to his administration before ending with a pointed suggestion that he resign from office.

O’Donnell Introduced Herself as “Nasty Rosie”

O’Donnell signaled almost immediately that Trump would be part of her final night behind Kimmel’s desk.

She introduced herself as “nasty Rosie O’Donnell,” referencing an insult Trump has directed at her during their years of public sparring. She also joked about the president supposedly watching her appearances throughout the week.

O’Donnell later referred to Trump as “orange Voldemort” while discussing free speech, maintaining the deliberately provocative tone that characterized many of her jokes during the guest-hosting stint.

The comedian had already targeted Trump during earlier episodes, including calling him “President Oompa J. Loompa” and joking that he had helped make her “re-famous.”

Her Final Monologue Became a Musical Roast

The biggest Trump moment came near the end of O’Donnell’s monologue.

She introduced what she jokingly described as a traditional Irish song for a “very special boy” before beginning her rewritten version of “Danny Boy.”

Rather than reproducing the original ballad, O’Donnell turned the familiar melody into a political roast. Her lyrics referenced Trump’s polling, the White House reflecting pool, his ballroom project, Iran and his appearance.

She also briefly targeted Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., referencing measles as part of the satirical number.

O’Donnell Ended by Calling on Trump to Resign

O’Donnell saved her most direct message for the end of the performance.

After working through several jokes about the administration, she invoked former President Barack Obama and urged Trump to leave office.

“Since we all know you’ll never be Obama,” O’Donnell sang before suggesting Trump resign and adapting his “Make America Great Again” slogan into the punchline of her song.

The performance drew laughter and applause from the studio audience, but it was also an unmistakably political ending to O’Donnell’s temporary return to network late-night television.

Trump and O’Donnell Have Feuded for Nearly 20 Years

The performance wasn’t simply another celebrity making jokes about a sitting president. Trump and O’Donnell have been publicly attacking each other for roughly two decades.

Their feud can be traced to O’Donnell’s first run on The View. In 2006, she criticized Trump while discussing his handling of controversy surrounding Miss USA Tara Conner.

Trump responded publicly, and the dispute quickly became personal.

Their hostility continued long after O’Donnell left The View. Trump famously mentioned her during the first Republican presidential debate in 2015 when moderator Megyn Kelly questioned him about derogatory language he had used toward women.

That history made O’Donnell’s return to a major television platform particularly notable.

Trump Became a Running Theme of Her Hosting Week

O’Donnell didn’t wait until her final episode to revive the feud.

On her first night guest-hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she acknowledged Trump directly, joking, “Hi! I know you’re watching.” She also used another mocking nickname for him during the monologue.

The jokes continued throughout the week.

O’Donnell later made a remark involving Trump aide Natalie Harp and repeatedly referenced her longstanding battle with the president. At one point, she jokingly thanked Trump for bringing her back into the public conversation.

Her final musical number therefore functioned almost like the conclusion to a week-long running joke.

The White House Fired Back

The exchange didn’t end when O’Donnell left the stage.

The White House subsequently responded to her repeated criticism, issuing its own highly personal attack against the comedian. A spokesperson called O’Donnell a “nasty woman” and a “total slob” while dismissing her criticism of the president.

The response demonstrated that, nearly 20 years after their original dispute began, neither side appears particularly interested in ending the public feud.

Could Rosie O’Donnell Be Planning a Bigger TV Return?

O’Donnell’s guest-hosting stint also generated speculation about whether viewers might be seeing more of her on television.

She has pushed back against suggestions that she intends to permanently replace Kimmel. However, O’Donnell has acknowledged that her team has explored possibilities for another television project.

Speaking on the Tangle podcast, she suggested a potential program could resemble The Rosie O’Donnell Show, the daytime hit she hosted from 1996 to 2002. She argued that audiences may currently have an appetite for nostalgia while being less interested in traditional celebrity culture.

O’Donnell also received some high-profile encouragement during her return. Barbra Streisand sent her a supportive message welcoming her back to television, something O’Donnell enthusiastically shared publicly.

For now, however, her Jimmy Kimmel Live! run has ended exactly as longtime followers of the Rosie O’Donnell-Donald Trump feud might have expected: with O’Donnell behind a microphone, Trump as the target, and no indication that their nearly two-decade war of words is finished.
