Patti LaBelle’s Nephew Says Supporting Donald Trump Led to Years of Estrangement From the Singer

Patti LaBelle’s nephew and adopted son, William “Byl” Holte, is speaking publicly about an alleged family rift that he says developed partly because of his support for President Donald Trump. Holte claims his political views contributed to the breakdown of his once-close relationship with the legendary singer and eventually resulted in what he describes as his “lifetime banishment” from her life.

The claims offer an unusually personal glimpse into the family life of LaBelle, who has generally kept private disagreements away from the spotlight. However, the account currently comes from Holte himself. LaBelle has not publicly confirmed his version of the dispute, making it important to distinguish his allegations from independently established facts.

Holte Says His Trump Support Came With a Personal Cost

Holte recently described the family conflict in a social media post about what supporting Trump had allegedly cost him.

“My aunt is Patti LaBelle, famous singer AND DEMOCRAT,” he wrote before recounting a confrontation he says occurred around Christmas 2019.

According to Holte, LaBelle had informed him that he needed to leave the home they had shared for approximately 12 years. When relatives subsequently discussed what they viewed as the dangers of Trump’s presidency, Holte said he challenged their argument by comparing their political concerns with his immediate housing situation.

Holte claims the exchange escalated rapidly and that family members turned against him.

His account has attracted attention because it combines a private family disagreement with one of America’s most divisive political subjects.

He Says a 2019 Christmas Argument Changed Everything

Holte identified Christmas 2019 as a particularly important moment in the deterioration of the relationship.

He said relatives were discussing Trump and describing him as a threat when he responded by asking why he should fear the president when LaBelle had just told him to leave her home.

According to Holte, the remark resulted in an immediate confrontation.

“Her family instantly attacked me and threw me out of her house,” he claimed.

There is currently no independent confirmation of precisely what occurred during the alleged confrontation. LaBelle has also not publicly provided her version of the Christmas incident described by Holte.

Their Relationship Was Much Closer Than Aunt and Nephew

The story carries additional emotional weight because LaBelle’s relationship with Holte went beyond the traditional aunt-nephew dynamic.

Holte is the son of LaBelle’s late sister Jacqueline Holte. After Jacqueline died, LaBelle helped raise her sister’s children and has referred to taking responsibility for them as part of her family.

LaBelle discussed becoming a mother figure to her sister’s children in her 1996 memoir, Don’t Block the Blessings: Revelations of a Lifetime. Her commitment to family has also been a recurring subject throughout interviews about her life away from music.

That history provides important context for Holte’s claim that he lived with LaBelle for 12 years.

The disagreement he describes therefore represents the breakdown of what had apparently been a significant parental relationship rather than simply a dispute between extended relatives.

Holte Says Social Media Created Another Conflict

Politics was not the only issue Holte identified.

He claims another disagreement developed over his decision to discuss his experiences with LaBelle publicly on social media.

According to Holte, LaBelle objected to him sharing details about their relationship and family life online. He framed his decision to continue speaking as an exercise of his First Amendment rights.

Holte claims the consequence was permanent estrangement.

“My punishment for using my 1st Amendment right this way was LIFETIME BANISHMENT,” he wrote.

That characterization represents Holte’s perspective. Without a public response from LaBelle, it is unclear whether she considers their estrangement permanent or whether other private circumstances contributed to their relationship deteriorating.

Patti LaBelle Has Largely Kept Family Matters Private

LaBelle, now one of the most recognizable voices in American music, has spent more than six decades in the public eye.

After emerging with Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles and later fronting Labelle, she established an enormously successful solo career. Songs including “Lady Marmalade,” “New Attitude” and “On My Own” became enduring hits.

Despite that visibility, LaBelle has generally spoken about her family on her own terms rather than publicly litigating private disagreements.

That makes Holte’s decision to discuss their alleged estrangement particularly notable.

His posts provide one side of a complicated family story, but without LaBelle’s account, the full circumstances behind their falling out remain unknown.

Holte’s account illustrates how political disagreements can become entangled with conflicts that already involve family, housing and personal boundaries.

His own description indicates that LaBelle’s decision that he should move out preceded the Christmas political argument. That chronology makes it difficult to characterize Trump support alone as the established cause of their estrangement.

LaBelle Has Not Publicly Confirmed His Claims

For now, the most important qualification surrounding the story is that Holte’s allegations have not been publicly corroborated by LaBelle.

There is no dispute that Holte has a close familial connection to the singer or that he has publicly described their relationship in these terms. What remains unverified is precisely why their relationship deteriorated and whether political disagreement was the decisive factor.
