Tom Holland Reveals Why Robert Pattinson Became His ‘Safety Blanket’ on The Odyssey

Michael Michael, August 19, 2026August 19, 2026

Tom Holland has revealed the amusing reason he felt an immediate sense of relief when he learned Robert Pattinson would be joining him in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The two actors already had years of experience working together, but Holland said their familiarity became particularly valuable when it came to establishing one of the movie’s most important rivalries.

During an Entertainment Weekly “Around the Table” conversation, Holland described Pattinson as his “safety blanket” while discussing the pressure he felt playing Telemachus opposite Pattinson’s Antinous. His explanation quickly turned humorous when he praised his co-star’s ability to convincingly play an unpleasant character.

Holland Felt Pressure Over His Crucial Role

Holland plays Telemachus, the son of Matt Damon’s Odysseus, in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic.

Robert Pattinson, meanwhile, portrays Antinous, one of the suitors pursuing Penelope while Odysseus is away from Ithaca.

That relationship placed considerable responsibility on Holland and Pattinson because the tension between Telemachus and Antinous helps establish the situation awaiting Odysseus back home.

Holland acknowledged that he felt the pressure of making the conflict convincing.

“The friction between our characters is so important for my entire journey,” Holland explained during the discussion.

Holland’s worries eased considerably once he discovered Pattinson had been cast opposite him.

The reason was simple: he already trusted Pattinson as a performer.

Holland jokingly explained that Pattinson was particularly suited to playing the antagonistic Antinous because of how effectively he can portray villainous or unpleasant characters.

The remark caught Pattinson by surprise and prompted a playful reaction from the actor, adding a lighthearted moment to the cast conversation.

Behind the joke, however, Holland was making a serious point about the confidence that comes from acting opposite someone whose abilities you already know.

They Had Already Built Trust on Previous Movies

The Odyssey was not the first time Holland and Pattinson had shared the screen.

The actors previously appeared together in James Gray’s The Lost City of Z, released in 2016, and later reunited for Antonio Campos’ dark psychological thriller The Devil All the Time, released in 2020.

Those earlier experiences allowed Holland to become familiar with Pattinson’s acting style long before they stepped onto Nolan’s ambitious production.

Holland said he has enjoyed working with Pattinson and feels he has benefited professionally from their collaborations.

“I’ve loved every minute of working with Rob and I’ve always felt like I’ve left the set a better actor,” Holland said.

Their Characters Are Far From Friendly

Although the two actors clearly enjoy working together, their characters in The Odyssey have a very different relationship.

Telemachus faces an increasingly difficult situation in Ithaca while waiting for his father to return from the Trojan War.

Antinous is positioned as one of the principal suitors competing for Penelope and represents a major threat within Odysseus’ household.

That made Pattinson’s performance particularly useful for Holland. The more convincing Pattinson could make Antinous’ hostility, the easier it became for Holland to respond naturally as Telemachus.

For Holland, knowing Pattinson would be standing opposite him meant one major element of the performance was already in dependable hands.

Christopher Nolan Assembled a Huge Cast

Holland and Pattinson are only two members of the enormous ensemble Nolan assembled for The Odyssey.

Matt Damon leads the movie as Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway portrays Penelope. The cast also includes Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Lupita Nyong’o, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, Samantha Morton, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth and several other notable performers.

Nolan wrote and directed the film, with longtime collaborator and wife Emma Thomas producing alongside him.

Universal Pictures described the project as a “mythic action epic,” with production taking place around the world and the movie filmed using IMAX film technology.

The Odyssey Arrived in Theaters in July 2026

The Odyssey opened in theaters on July 17, 2026, bringing Nolan’s interpretation of Homer’s foundational story to audiences.

The movie follows Odysseus as he attempts to return home to Ithaca following the Trojan War, encountering extraordinary dangers during his journey.

For Holland, however, one of the most important parts of the story was the conflict unfolding back home.

That responsibility initially created some anxiety, but the arrival of a familiar co-star apparently changed everything.

Familiarity Made a Challenging Performance Easier

Holland calling Pattinson his “safety blanket” may have generated laughs, but his explanation also revealed the trust the two actors have developed through their previous collaborations.

Rather than worrying about whether their crucial on-screen rivalry would work, Holland knew what Pattinson could bring to the role.

And judging by Holland’s playful praise of Pattinson’s ability to portray difficult characters, having a familiar face playing his enemy was exactly what he needed.
