Dylan Sprouse says unforgettable David Lynch encounter inspired him to quit smoking

Dylan Sprouse has shared the remarkable story of how an unexpected encounter with legendary filmmaker David Lynch became the reason he gave up smoking.

Speaking on Amanda Hirsch’s Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, the actor recalled meeting Lynch during a dinner outing in Los Angeles, describing the experience as the only time he has ever truly been starstruck. Rather than asking for an autograph or a photo, Sprouse walked away with something he says was even more meaningful a memory that ultimately changed one of his habits for good.

A chance meeting at a Los Angeles restaurant

Sprouse explained that he and his now-wife, model Barbara Palvin, were dining at a restaurant when he realized David Lynch and actress Laura Dern were seated nearby.

A longtime admirer of Lynch’s work, Sprouse admitted he immediately became nervous after recognizing the filmmaker’s voice.

Not wanting to interrupt their dinner, he stepped outside for a cigarette instead.

That decision unexpectedly led to a memorable conversation.

David Lynch approached him first

While Sprouse was smoking outside, Lynch walked over and politely asked whether he had a cigarette.

The actor happily obliged, and the two quietly smoked together.

A short time later, Laura Dern joined them and asked Lynch for a cigarette. Sprouse recalled being surprised when Lynch pulled out a fresh pack from his pocket and offered her one, despite having accepted Sprouse’s cigarette moments earlier.

After finishing, Lynch thanked Sprouse for being respectful and walked away.

For Sprouse, that brief exchange left a lasting impression.

“I’ll never have a better cigarette”

Reflecting on the encounter, Sprouse said the experience convinced him it was the perfect moment to quit smoking.

He joked that he would “never have a better cigarette” than the one he shared with David Lynch.

Rather than remembering the meeting through a selfie or autograph, Sprouse said he treasured the story itself.

He also praised Lynch for recognizing that he was an excited fan while handling the situation with kindness and generosity.

According to Sprouse, Lynch demonstrated an elegant way of interacting with admirers without making the moment uncomfortable.

David Lynch’s own relationship with smoking

Lynch died in January 2025 at the age of 78.

Before his death, the acclaimed director revealed that he had been diagnosed with emphysema in 2020 after decades of smoking.

In interviews, Lynch openly acknowledged how closely cigarettes had been tied to his creative life, explaining that smoking had long been part of his routines as both a painter and filmmaker.

He once recalled beginning to smoke as a child and said he loved nearly every aspect of the habit, from the smell of tobacco to the ritual of lighting a cigarette.

His later health struggles ultimately became a reminder of smoking’s long-term consequences.

A memory more valuable than an autograph

For Sprouse, the brief interaction became one of the defining celebrity encounters of his life.

Instead of collecting a signature or photograph, he left with what he considers a far more meaningful keepsake: a personal story involving one of his artistic heroes.
