Howard Stern Staffers Describe Alleged Strict Behind the Scenes Rules at SiriusXM

Michael Michael, August 18, 2026

Howard Stern has spent decades building one of the most recognizable brands in American radio, but new claims from people described as former staffers are drawing attention to what allegedly happened behind the scenes of his SiriusXM operation.

Sources speaking to The U.S. Sun described an unusually controlled workplace culture, including an alleged rule discouraging employees from approaching Stern at company gatherings. The claims have emerged during a period of major change for The Howard Stern Show, which has reportedly experienced substantial staff reductions while Stern prepares for a lighter broadcasting schedule. Stern and SiriusXM have not publicly verified the specific workplace allegations.

Staffers Were Allegedly Warned About Approaching Stern

One of the most attention-grabbing claims concerns company parties.

An insider told The U.S. Sun that employees were allegedly warned before such events not to approach Stern or initiate conversations with him. The source went further, claiming workers had been told that violating the expectation could potentially put their employment at risk.

However, the report did not identify specific employees who were confirmed to have been fired solely for speaking to Stern at a company gathering. That distinction is important because the account comes from unnamed sources rather than publicly documented disciplinary cases.

Still, the allegation has generated interest because Stern has worked with SiriusXM since 2006 and oversees a program whose staff members have occasionally become personalities themselves.

Sources Describe an Insular Workplace Culture

Former staffers also characterized the environment surrounding Stern’s operation as unusually focused on its famous host.

One source described employees as eager to receive Stern’s approval and claimed photographs of the broadcaster were displayed extensively around the show’s work area.

Staff members reportedly even greeted one another using “Hey now,” a phrase closely associated with Stern and his program.

According to the source, those traditions could initially seem playful. But after leaving the environment and looking back, the insider said the workplace felt different, describing aspects of its culture as “cult-like.”

That description represents the former staffers’ personal characterization rather than an independently established assessment of Stern’s workplace.

Another Source Offers a More Conventional Explanation

A second insider reportedly agreed that Stern’s operation might appear unusual to outsiders but offered a less dramatic explanation for employees’ behavior.

The source suggested that workers naturally wanted to impress Stern because he was the central figure behind the show and held enormous influence within the operation.

That dynamic is hardly unique to entertainment. Employees in many workplaces attempt to gain the approval of powerful executives or creative leaders.

What makes the Stern allegations notable is the degree of separation former staffers claim existed between the broadcaster and parts of his workforce.

The Claims Arrive After Significant Staff Cuts

The workplace allegations have surfaced as The Howard Stern Show undergoes substantial restructuring.

Reports in July said roughly a dozen employees had recently been laid off from the SiriusXM program. Staff members reportedly learned about the cuts through a Zoom meeting, while severance arrangements were based partly on how long employees had worked there.

Other reports have claimed the reductions were even broader when earlier 2026 cuts are included, though exact totals have varied between outlets. Because SiriusXM has not publicly provided a comprehensive employee-by-employee breakdown, reported numbers should be treated cautiously.

Some former employees were also reportedly negotiating their severance terms, adding another layer to the upheaval surrounding the longtime radio institution.

The staffing changes coincide with reports that Stern plans to significantly reduce the number of new programs he produces.

After Labor Day, the show is reportedly expected to move toward one new episode each week, with Stern’s extensive archive helping fill additional programming time.

The reduced schedule follows Stern’s new three-year agreement with SiriusXM.

Stern officially announced the extension in December 2025, saying the arrangement would allow him to remain on the radio while enjoying more free time and a more flexible schedule. SiriusXM subsequently confirmed the three-year agreement in its financial reporting.

Whatever the reality behind the newly reported workplace claims, Stern’s radio operation is clearly entering a different phase.

The broadcaster has been a defining SiriusXM personality for two decades, transforming his terrestrial-radio success into an enormously influential satellite-radio franchise.

The latest allegations provide only former staffers’ side of the workplace story and should not be treated as independently proven facts. What is confirmed is that Stern has renewed his SiriusXM relationship while gaining greater scheduling flexibility, and his program has recently undergone reported staff reductions.

Together, those developments suggest The Howard Stern Show is becoming a smaller and less frequently live operation as one of American radio’s longest-running personalities moves into the next stage of his career.
