Australian rock singer Phil Jamieson has canceled his upcoming tour after suffering a fractured lower back during an onstage accident, telling fans he now faces a “long road to recovery.”

The 49-year-old musician, best known as the longtime frontman of Australian rock band Grinspoon, shared details of the frightening incident on Instagram on August 10. Jamieson explained that he slipped during a performance on August 7 and struck his back against the drum riser, bringing the concert to an abrupt end.

Jamieson described the accident directly to followers while announcing the cancellation of his planned performances.

According to the singer, he slipped onstage and his spine “connected to the drum riser.” The impact was serious enough that he could not continue performing.

Jamieson was transported by ambulance to Latrobe Regional Hospital in Victoria, Australia, where medical staff carried out tests to determine the extent of his injuries.

He later shared photographs documenting the hospital visit, including an image of himself in a hospital bed and what appeared to be medical imaging of his injured back.

After undergoing examinations, Jamieson said doctors determined that he had fractured his L1 vertebra in his lower back.

“I spent most of Friday in emergency getting different tests etc and by 4am I was confirmed to have fractured my L1,” Jamieson wrote.

He said he was prescribed bed rest and acknowledged that his recovery would take time.

The musician did not provide a specific timeline for when he expects to return to performing, instead describing what lies ahead as a “long road to recovery.”

His Upcoming Tour Has Been Canceled

The injury forced Jamieson to make a decision no touring musician wants to make.

“This means, sigh, that the tour is cancelled,” he told followers.

Jamieson explained that venues and ticketing companies would contact ticket holders regarding refunds.

He made clear that canceling the performances was unavoidable given his current condition.

“No-one is more bummed about this than me, but I can’t stand up let alone play a gig at the moment,” he wrote.

According to Nine News, Jamieson had been scheduled to perform dates across Australia through September 1. His official website subsequently showed no upcoming concerts.

New Album Plans Were Also Affected

The accident comes at an especially unfortunate moment in Jamieson’s solo career.

His new album, 10Charlie, was scheduled for release on August 14, and the singer had planned an album launch celebration as part of the project.

That event has also been canceled because of his injury.

Jamieson nevertheless encouraged fans to listen to the record despite his inability to celebrate its arrival as originally planned.

“If you feel like wrapping your earholes around it, I would be grateful,” he wrote, adding that considerable work had gone into the album and that he loved the finished project.

Fans Send Messages of Support

Jamieson’s announcement prompted an immediate response from fans, friends and followers.

Many wished him a speedy recovery while encouraging him to focus on resting rather than worrying about canceled performances.

One commenter described the accident as “hectic” and sent wishes for a quick recovery, while another expressed hope that Jamieson would eventually be back onstage performing again.

The singer thanked everyone who had contacted him and expressed appreciation for the messages and offers of assistance he had received following the accident.

Jamieson also made a point of thanking the people who cared for him following his fall.

He praised the treatment he received at Latrobe Regional Hospital, describing the care as “elite.”

The singer specifically thanked his paramedics and discharge nurse while reflecting on the assistance he received after the accident.

Despite the seriousness of the injury and disappointment surrounding the canceled tour, Jamieson maintained some of his characteristic humor.

He signed off his message by describing himself as “PJ in my pjs for the foreseeable future.”

A Familiar Voice in Australian Rock

Jamieson became widely known as the frontman of Grinspoon, one of Australia’s prominent alternative-rock bands to emerge during the 1990s.

Formed in Lismore, New South Wales, the group built a substantial following after winning Triple J’s inaugural Unearthed competition in 1995.

Grinspoon subsequently released successful albums including Guide to Better Living, Easy, New Detention and Thrills, Kills + Sunday Pills.

Jamieson has also pursued solo projects outside the group, including his 2022 solo album Somebody Else and the newly announced 10Charlie.

For now, however, performing has been put aside.

Jamieson’s message made clear that his immediate priority is recovering from the fractured vertebra. Although he has not announced when he might return to the stage, he ended his update with a hopeful message to supporters: “I hope to see you all soon.”
