Jenna Bush Hager Tears Up Over Daughter Poppy’s Sweet Reaction During Their Special Birthday Night

Jenna Bush Hager became emotional while recalling a surprisingly simple exchange with her 11-year-old daughter, Poppy. What began as a birthday trip to an Olivia Dean concert turned into a meaningful mother-daughter memory that left the Today with Jenna & Sheinelle co-host fighting back tears on television.

Bush Hager, 44, took Poppy to see Dean at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 18 as a special birthday present. Speaking about the outing the following day, she explained that having one-on-one time with her middle child reminded her just how much she enjoys Poppy’s personality. PEOPLE reported the emotional conversation and details of their night together.

A Special Birthday Night for Poppy

Poppy celebrated her 11th birthday earlier in August, and Bush Hager decided that seeing Olivia Dean together would make a memorable gift.

Rather than turning the concert into a larger family event, Bush Hager said it was an outing for only the two of them. She described Poppy as an exceptionally fun person and began getting emotional almost immediately while recounting their evening.

The television personality shares three children with her husband, Henry Hager: daughters Mila, 13, and Poppy, 11, and son Hal, 6.

Their Matching Outfits Led to an Unexpected Moment

One of the most meaningful parts of the evening happened before the concert really got underway.

Bush Hager wore polka dots after getting fashion advice from her older daughter, Mila. Poppy happened to be wearing polka dots as well.

Aware that many preteens might not be thrilled about accidentally matching their mother, Bush Hager offered to change. Poppy’s response caught her by surprise: she essentially wondered why her mother thought matching would bother her.

It was an ordinary exchange, but for Bush Hager, it represented something much bigger.

Bush Hager Became Emotional on Air

While telling the story, Bush Hager wiped away tears as she reflected on the fact that Poppy wasn’t embarrassed to be matching her mother.

She jokingly referred to herself as an “annoying mother,” but her larger point was about Poppy’s confidence. Bush Hager said her daughter seems remarkably comfortable with herself and doesn’t allow other people’s reactions to diminish her enthusiasm.

The two were able to dance together at the concert without Bush Hager feeling that her presence embarrassed her daughter. That realization appeared to be what made the memory particularly emotional for the TV host.

Olivia Dean’s Concert Created Another Sweet Memory

Bush Hager’s co-host Sheinelle Jones had attended the Olivia Dean concert on a different night with her own daughter, Clara.

Jones recalled a portion of the performance in which Dean encouraged audience members to embrace their best friends. Both mothers experienced the same touching reaction: their daughters hugged them.

The pair joked about being relieved that their preteen and teenage daughters apparently still liked spending time with them.

For Bush Hager, however, the concert represented more than entertainment. She described Dean as a “rare talent” and reflected on how meaningful it can be for parents to experience music, books and other forms of art alongside their children.

She’s Continuing a Tradition Started by Laura Bush

The evening also reminded Bush Hager of experiences she had with her own mother, former First Lady Laura Bush.

Growing up in Texas, Bush Hager remembered her mother taking her to concerts, including performances by Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Jimmy Cliff. Now she finds herself creating similar memories with her own children.

That connection between generations appears particularly meaningful for Bush Hager. She has previously spoken about sharing interests with her mother and passing traditions down to her children, including a family love of reading.

Poppy Recently Turned 11

Bush Hager had already celebrated her daughter’s milestone publicly before their concert outing.

In an Instagram birthday tribute, she compared Poppy to the flower whose name she carries, describing her daughter as vibrant, effervescent and exceptionally funny. She ended the message with a simple reminder that Poppy is loved.

Bush Hager frequently discusses the complicated balance between parenting and a demanding television career. In April 2025, for example, she admitted feeling terrible after work obligations caused her to miss son Hal’s play.

A Simple Comment Became the Highlight of the Night

Ultimately, there wasn’t a dramatic event behind Bush Hager’s tears. It was Poppy’s uncomplicated willingness to match her mother, dance beside her and enjoy their evening together that affected her most.

As children approach their teenage years, parents often become increasingly aware that those moments of easy closeness can change. For Bush Hager, the Olivia Dean concert provided reassurance that Poppy was still delighted to share the experience with her.
