Ryan Reynolds Faced Hollywood Scrutiny but His Career Tells a Different Story

Ryan Reynolds has spent much of the past two years under an unusual level of scrutiny because of the highly publicized legal conflict involving his wife, Blake Lively, and her It Ends With Us costar and director Justin Baldoni. Reynolds became directly involved when Baldoni named him in a $400 million lawsuit, bringing one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actors into an already complicated dispute.

The controversy generated headlines about whether Reynolds’ standing in Hollywood had suffered. Yet claims that the actor has effectively been rejected by the entertainment industry are difficult to reconcile with his continuing professional activity. Reynolds has a major Apple film arriving in September 2026 and remains involved through his Maximum Effort production company. The evidence points to reputational scrutiny, but not a demonstrated industry-wide shutdown of his career.

Ryan Reynolds Became Part of the Baldoni Legal Battle

Reynolds was pulled directly into the dispute after Baldoni filed a lawsuit against Lively, Reynolds and others.

Baldoni alleged that the group participated in efforts that damaged his reputation following Lively’s allegations about her experience working on It Ends With Us. Reynolds denied wrongdoing.

The lawsuit generated extensive media coverage because Reynolds was not simply Lively’s husband but an enormously successful actor, producer and entrepreneur in his own right.

However, allegations contained in a lawsuit are claims rather than established facts.

A Judge Dismissed Baldoni’s $400 Million Lawsuit

U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman dismissed Baldoni’s $400 million lawsuit against Lively, Reynolds and others. Reuters reported that the judge found Baldoni had failed to plausibly establish the defamation and conspiracy claims at issue.

The ruling significantly reduced Reynolds’ direct exposure to Baldoni’s lawsuit.

Baldoni’s separate $250 million lawsuit against The New York Times was also dismissed. The broader legal dispute involving Lively continued afterward, keeping Reynolds’ name connected to the controversy even after the claims against him were thrown out.

Reports Questioned Reynolds’ Hollywood Reputation

The legal battle inevitably produced speculation about whether the controversy had damaged Reynolds professionally.

Some entertainment coverage cited unnamed Hollywood insiders discussing potential reputational consequences. Such accounts can provide insight into industry sentiment, but they do not establish that Hollywood collectively stopped working with Reynolds.

A genuine industry-wide blacklist would normally produce more concrete evidence, such as studios publicly abandoning projects, canceled contracts or a documented pattern of Reynolds losing announced roles specifically because of the controversy.

The projects that remain publicly active complicate such a conclusion.

Maximum Effort Remains Part of His Career

Reynolds is more than an actor-for-hire. His Maximum Effort company has become an important part of his entertainment career, allowing him to develop and produce projects in addition to appearing onscreen.

Maximum Effort previously extended its film relationship with Paramount through a three-year first-look agreement announced in 2024.

Such an agreement does not guarantee that every proposed movie will ultimately reach production, and it should not be treated as proof that Reynolds’ reputation has suffered no consequences.

Ryan Reynolds Has a Major Apple Movie Coming

Perhaps the clearest evidence that Reynolds remains active is Mayday.

Apple confirmed that Reynolds stars opposite Kenneth Branagh in the action comedy, which will premiere globally on Apple TV on September 4, 2026.

Reynolds plays U.S. Navy pilot Troy “Assassin” Kelly, whose Cold War mission leaves him stranded behind enemy lines. Branagh plays Nikolai Ustinov, an ex-KGB agent who becomes his unlikely ally.

Apple released the official trailer on July 14, 2026, placing Reynolds prominently in the company’s marketing campaign.

Maximum Effort is also involved in the production, with Reynolds serving as an executive producer.

“Mayday” Challenges the Career Crisis Narrative

The timing of Mayday is particularly relevant to claims that Reynolds has become untouchable in Hollywood.

The film is an Apple Original produced with Skydance Media and Maximum Effort, and Reynolds remains its leading star alongside Branagh.

A single film cannot establish the overall state of an actor’s career, especially because movies are often developed and filmed years before their release.

Still, Apple’s active promotion of Reynolds in a major 2026 release provides concrete evidence against the strongest versions of the claim that Hollywood companies currently refuse to associate with him.

Deadpool Remains Closely Associated With Reynolds

Reynolds also remains inseparable from one of Marvel’s most commercially successful characters.

Until Marvel formally announces another film, however, reports about future Deadpool projects should be distinguished from a confirmed release.

There is little question that Reynolds has experienced a period of unusually intense negative publicity because of his connection to the Lively-Baldoni dispute.

What is much harder to establish is the broader claim that Hollywood has collectively turned against him.
