TikTok influencer César Gastélum killed during livestream outside restaurant in Mexico

Mexican TikTok creator César Gastélum was fatally shot while livestreaming outside a fast-food restaurant in Culiacán, Sinaloa, on the evening of Aug. 4, according to local authorities and multiple news reports. The killing has shocked social media users and renewed attention on the ongoing violence affecting the region.

Gastélum, known for his comedy videos and engaging online personality, had built an audience of more than 600,000 followers on TikTok. His death is the latest in a series of violent incidents to occur in Sinaloa, a state that has experienced a sharp rise in homicides over the past year.

Shooting occurred during a livestream

According to Reuters and Mexican outlet Excélsior, Gastélum was livestreaming outside a fast-food restaurant in Culiacán at approximately 8 p.m. local time when the attack occurred.

Reports state that two men arrived on a motorcycle while Gastélum was with two other people. The passenger allegedly opened fire, striking the influencer during the livestream.

Authorities said Gastélum died at the scene.

Video of the livestream circulated online after the shooting, although officials have not commented on the footage itself.

Authorities launch investigation

Following the attack, multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene.

According to Excélsior, members of the Mexican Army, the State Preventive Police and investigators from the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Sinaloa secured the area, collected evidence and recovered spent shell casings as part of the investigation.

Officials have not announced any arrests or identified a motive for the shooting.

The Sinaloa State Public Security Secretariat has not publicly released additional details regarding the case.

Gastélum was widely recognized on TikTok for creating comedy and entertainment content that attracted hundreds of thousands of followers.

His videos regularly generated strong engagement, helping him become a well-known digital creator in Mexico.

Following news of his death, fans and fellow content creators shared tributes across social media, expressing shock and condolences to his family and loved ones.

Violence continues in Sinaloa

Gastélum’s killing comes as Sinaloa continues to experience significant public security challenges.

The state has seen ongoing violence linked to organized crime, contributing to a substantial increase in homicide rates in recent years. According to Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography, cited by local media, the state’s homicide rate rose sharply between 2024 and 2025.

The U.S. Department of State currently lists Sinaloa under its highest Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory because of crime concerns.

Authorities have not indicated whether Gastélum’s death is connected to broader criminal activity, and investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
